A few chapters into the book we get to know a little more about Turtle and find out about the abuse she suffered. Taylor freaks out when Turtle is almost kidnapped at the park and says, “ I’ve just spent the last eight or nine months trying to convince her that nobody would hurt her again. Why would she believe me now?” (p. 226) Taylor grew
This is “bad news” for Taylor, because it means that the government has the right to legally take Turtle away from her. Since Taylor has “no legal claim” to Turtle, she must either find a way to adopt Turtle, or give her up to the government. Taylor has started to learn how to thrive with Turtle, but she must first go through the struggle of finding Turtle’s legal guardian, and having them give Turtle to her. Since she doesn’t even know the name of the woman who gave Turtle to her, finding her, or finding another way to adopt Turtle, will be one of Taylor’s hardest trials in stage three of her journey. At first Taylor is unsure about what her life may look like but by the end of the story the reader gets to see Taylor with her new family in Tucson, Arizona and predict what may happen next. In the beginning, Taylor was appalled at the idea of raising a child and she even tried to come up with ideas of how to get rid of Turtle from her care. It was in Taylor’s best interest to escape pregnancy since she had witnessed multiple girls drop out of high school due to becoming pregnant. “It was in this frame of mind that I made it to my last year of high school without event. Believe me in those days the girls were dropping by the wayside like seeds off a poppyseed bun and you learned to look at every day as a prize” (4).
After this incident, Taylor was convinced that she can’t take care of Turtle since she couldn’t keep her safe from the world. According to The Bean Trees, “…That they have the right to take her out of a perfectly good home and put her in some creepy orphanage where they probably make them sleep on burlap bags and feed them pig slop”(Kingsolver 235). Even though, Taylor believed that she can’t keep Turtle safe from this society where people try to hurt a child so young, on the other hand, Lou Ann thinks that Taylor can keep Turtle safer than anybody else. According to Abuse in America, “As of September 30, 2004, there were 517,000 children in foster care in the United States” (“Abuse in America”). This shows that people that are living the way that Lou Ann has described is not safe for children, not to mention that lots of people, because of poverty put their children
How the World Uniquely Begins Native American myths and the Christian Bible both offer stories about how the world began.. In “The Earth on Turtle’s Back” and Genesis 1, both tales have similar values and ideas. These two stories compare in that both tell the importance of water, the fact that Earth came out of the water, and the existence of supreme beings; in contrast, each story has a unique idea of how the world came into being. “The Earth on Turtle’s Back,” a story from the Onondaga tribe, an original Native American group, is a myth which relates a story about the beginning of the world. Water is below the Skyland and it becomes an issue when the Great Tree is uprooted.
In Rot & Ruin, the author uses the theme of family being important. Here is a example of the theme from the book “He barely liked his family-and by family he meant his older brother. Tom.” The conflict is that Benny and Tom do not have a good relationship and have grudges against each other. If you hold grudges against your family or do not have a good relationship with your family, you will have no one to fall back on and you will be by yourself.
She says “With a kind of misery I could not imagine.” Taylor is realizing the new horrors of the world and the new found empathy for this child. She acts in a noble manner by taking in Turtle and not putting her back on the street. This is a true act of courage, that now every human has in them but Taylor did; she had the courage to take in Turtle but she then developed compassion and love for the child that she did not birth.
Mythical Origins The Iroquois people are one of the earliest cultures in American history, Their culture remains filled with an abundance of myths and legends that explain the nature of life itself. Their creation story, The World On Turtle 's Back, outlines not only the creation of Earth, but also the complex nature of people. The legend states that the Earth resided on the back of a great sea turtle, constituted first by a pregnant woman. The daughter of whom would birth the twins who would become the duality of deceit and order in every living being. This legend has been passed down through the generations, first through oral tradition and later translated to writing.
Family More Than Just Blood People often assume that the definition of family is people who are bound by blood. However, people may consider someone of no relation to be family because of other factors that do not pertain to family trees. E.B. White’s short story “Once More to the Lake”, Gary Soto’s short story “One Last Time”, and Robert Hayden’s poem “Those Winter Sundays”, shows that family is not bound by blood but by shared memories, passed knowledge, and love. Memories are one of the most important aspects of a family.
For some of my family the search for individuality is an ongoing process. In fact, my family and the family in “Everyday Use” share similarities and differences when it comes to actions of young people, the treatment of children, and relationships between family members. Firstly, the young people in my family and in the short story share similarities and differences when it comes to our actions. Dee, known as Wangero, and I have some similarities.
The great turtle was not just some ordinary turtle he had something very special about him. The great turtle was named Pete. Pete was just an ordinary turtle until one day his life changed forever. Pete being himself was walking in the grass getting his normal exercise. He also like feeling the warm sun on his shell.
Families are said to constitute realities in which most of one’s attributes are constructed, based on the family interactions, beliefs, values as well as the behaviours that are seen in the specific families one is brought up into (Archer & McCarthy, 2007). However, even though most of one’s personal characteristics may be heavily influenced by their families; people do have a sense of individuality that makes them unique from any other person in the family (Becvar & Becvar, 2013). Therefore, one may argue that it is these differences that may cause misunderstandings in families.
Another example would be Albert and Shug Avery, they are not related but Albert goes and picks up Shug and cares for her when she is sick (Walker, 45). In this book Alice Walker proves that family is not just people who an individual is related to by blood, family can be people who have been there to help an individual when they need it. Most

In the series Modern family, it shows the dynamics of a 21st century family and how traditions and culture has evolved over the years. As opposed to “nuclear family” “No longer does the traditional family consist of two parents and two children; instead, more diverse and shifting family structures are becoming the norm.
