The deer is tangled up in the rope and can barely move. Its neck is rubbed raw and bleeding from being tied up and is also cut open from the deer’s own hooves. A lot of people gather around, many of which, including Dillard, are unaffected by the gruesome sight. This is further illustrated when Dillard is describing the horrible imagery of the deer in a very flat and unemotional way.
