Two Different Periodic Times There are two stories that talk about American in the 20th century, and we can notice the differences and similarities between that time in America and now in Iraqi Kurdistan. The two stories that are compared to Iraqi Kurdistan’s culture and society are The Killer and Good Country People. The first story talks about two criminals who enter a lunch-room, and they are very rude. Their aim is to kill someone who they never met, and that person is called Ole Andreson. Moreover, it talks about segregation and ways of social life. The second story talks about a rich woman, Mrs. Hopewell, and her daughter Joy. One difference between them is in class structure. In the story, the white people are classified to trash and Good country people. In the Good Country People, “The reason for her keeping them so long was that they were not trash. They were good country people.” That was Mrs. Hopewell’s classification of people. She was rich women, and in her view good people were those people who are not poor. And her daughter Joy hated all her country people, and in the story it is mentioned that “Joy had made it plain that if it had not been for this condition, she would be far from these red hills and good country people.” These reflect their opinions toward poor people, and the conditions that were required to name a person as a good country people. It is kind of different in Kurdistan because there is not classification of people as trash, and the rich people are not always good country people. Being good is not about how much money you have, but it is about the works that you have done in your life. For instance, there can be a rich person, who does not do good works, and that person is not classified a good person just because of the money that he/ her
