People’s ages and the time periods in which they have lived can cause them to disagree about certain issues The fact that age and experience shape people’s understanding is evident in a debate between young rapper Tyler the Creator and older critic Dr. Boyce Watkins. In 2013, the two men disagreed about the content of Tyler the Creator’s Mountain Dew commercials. The first of the three commercials feature a goat who, after drinking a Mountain Dew, physically assaults his waitress and flees a restaurant. In the second ad, the goat is speeding on the interstate when he is stopped by a police officer. Because he appears drunk, the officer searches the goat’s trunk to find it full of Mountain Dew. However, before the officer can arrest the goat for his “Dew-WI”, the goat flees. Boyce Watkin’s point of view was too critical because they both came from different communities, time period, and education status. Dr. Boyce Watkins interpreted Tyler the Creator’s advertisement suggesting that African American male assaulted a white woman, due to the fact that it was a commercial and was not meant to be racial; one thinking might differ while Tyler the Creator’s point wasn’t intended to offend Dr. Boyce Watkins, Tyler the Creator just wanted it to be entertaining. In the story “Of the Coming of John” many of the people around his community was disgracing him because he was an African American male wanting to go to college. Many said he couldn’t do it because he was of black decent. Eventually he was profile as a criminal for standing up for his sister while she was getting assaulted by a white man which proved that African American is incapable of doing showing that this was only a stereotype
