My report is about: How does diet lead to Type 2 diabetes and how can this be prevented?
My report is about investigating the research question ‘How does diet (what people eat) lead to Type 2 diabetes and how can this be prevented?’ Type 2 diabetes is becoming a bigger and bigger issue in New Zealand. According to the Ministry of Health Statistics, 1 in 17 adults report being diagnosed with diabetes, which is around 205,000 adults out of New Zealand’s population. This number is increasing every year and even though Type 2 Diabetes is commonly found in middle aged/older people, the number of children aged 10 and up being diagnosed with type 2 is increasing as well. Having too much glucose in the blood as a result of eating too much unhealthy food will lead to health problems such as diabetes. Having a diet which consists of highly processed fats and sugars which are found in junk foods and lots of carbohydrates will result in a faster rise of higher blood sugars and insulin release from the pancreas. This can lead to overeating because the energy from the sugars and fats is used by the body more quickly, overexertion of the pancreas trying to keep up with the amount of insulin it needs to produce for the body’s cells to absorb the high amount of sugars, which can then lead to failure of the pancreas, no insulin being produced and the person developing type 2 diabetes. Whereas having a diet of mostly fresh fruit and vegetables is healthier overall for your body because of all the minerals and vitamins, the fruits and vegetables energy takes longer for the body to burn up and they keep the body’s blood sugars more stable and in the normal range which reduces the risk of diabetes and other health
