Diabetes is becoming one of the leading causes of death in New Zealand. 1 in 20 adults have been diagnosed with diabetes in their lifetime. Maori and pasifika people have a higher chance of getting type 2 diabetes in comparison to any other ethnicity due to the high rates in obesity and their genes which is due to diet, lack of exercise and there family history. Diabetes is a huge issue. The number of people who have been diagnosed with diabetes have doubled in the past 10 years. In 1996 there was 81,000 people who were found to have type 2 diabetes. By 2011 these numbers increased to 156,000 and by 2013 there were over 240,000 people diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes are affecting more and more people in the community each year. Insulin is made in the organ the pancreas. The pancreas is found behind the stomach, the pancreas contains a collection of cells called islets. Beta cells within the islets make insulin and release the insulin into the blood. With the high glucose levels in your blood from the insulin not being able to break it down it slowly causes complications like heart disease from the damaging of the nerves and blood vessels, kidney disease, strokes, dental disease, blindness and maybe even resulting in people having to have amputations on their limbs.
Overall the ethnicities it is proven that pasifika people have a higher chance of getting type 2 diabetes rather than other ethnicity. Type 2 diabetes could be prevented if people went back to the basics. Obesity is one of the leading causes for type 2 diabetes, obesity can be prevented if people did their basic exercise and they cut all the saturated fats and sugars out of there diet. There is a issue with pricing nowadays the unhealthy food is cheap and the healthy food is more expensive so pasifika people go for the cheaper option so they save money for other things such as bills.
