“The course of love never did run smooth” (William Shakespeare).In Romeo and Juliet, there are several different types of love. There is unrequited love between Romeo and Rosaline, family love between the Capulets and their daughter, and love of family honor with Tybalt and his family name. The two most noticed types of love in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ though, is romantic love, and friendship. Without these two types of love, the world would be a place with no happiness, and nothing to look forward to.
The most obvious type of love in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is, without a doubt, romantic love. A place where romantic love is shown is in the most well known scene in ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ the balcony scene. Romeo and Juliet exchange vows and love, and ultimately decide to get married. Romeo overhears Juliet talking to herself on her balcony, and when she finishes talking, he replies quietly with, “As daylight doth a lamp. Her eyes in heaven/ Would through the airy region stream so bright/ That birds would sing and think it were not night./ See how she lays her cheek upon her hand./ O that I were a glove upon that hand,/That I might touch that cheek!”( 2.2.19-23). Romeo and Benvolio are good friends, as told in the story. When Romeo comes strolling along after the fight between the Montagues and Capulets, Benvolio goes up to Romeo and asks him what is wrong. Romeo explains that he is in love, but the woman he fell for does not return his feelings. Benvolio responds with “Alas, that love, so gentle in his view, Should be so tyrannous and rough in proof!” (1.1.164-5). Benvolio says this to let Romeo know that he is not alone, and that many people understand what he is going through. Benvolio says this to also show that he cares about romeo and wants to help him; he is being sympathetic to romeo's
