Someone who shows courage, selfishness and acceptance would be consider a great hero. In the fictional book, The Adventure of Ulysses, by Bernard Evslin, it talks about Ulysses’s journey to Ithaca, after the Trojan War. While being hunted down by Poseidon, Ulysses and his crew stumbled upon many adventures before finally reaching their home, Ithaca. In The Adventures of Ulysses, Ulysses personifies an epic hero. The traits that make Ulysses a hero is his ways of dealing with temptations and not giving in, being able to have many guides to help him, and his smart and wise ways of thinking. Ulysses was told by Circe that he would have to visit the “Land of the Dead” or known as Tartarus. He was also told by Circe that he would be advised by wise ghosts before returning home to Ithaca. He meet the ghost of Achilles, one of the many guides, who told him of an important matter, “When you leave this place, you will sail past an island where you will hear the voices of maidens singing. And the sound of their singing will be sweeter than memories of home, and when your men hear them, their wits will be scattered, and they will wish to dive overboard and swim to shore. If they do, they will perish. For these maidens are a band of witch sisters — music-mad sisters — who lure sailors to the rocks so that they may flay them and make drums of their skin and flutes of their bones. They are he Siren sisters. When you pass their shore, steer clear, steer clear.” (77). The ghost of Achilles is telling Ulysses to make his men ignore the voices of the maidens singing and steer clear. For they are a band of music-mad witch sisters, who lure sailors passing by their rock. With the ghost of Achilles warning Ulysses ahead of time proves that he has a guide in life to lead and advise him. Ulysses is very lucky to be able to have many guides to help and lead him, but the most important and valuable trait of all is that he is not foolish, but very smart and
