Date: Un-TV: You are What You Watch Television sets have become a constant feature in people’s homes since the late 20th century. Indeed, television shows have come to define and reflect the modern culture. People watch television every day for the purpose entertainment and stay informed. To that extent, one can make various sociological observations by simply watching a TV show. For this experiment, I counted the technical events in a TV segment for ten minutes, watched a TV show without sound, and then watch a news program in a similar fashion. I chose to watch Modern Family; even though I could not hear anything I could clearly see the social construction of gender. The TV series “Modern Family” is a prime example when it comes to showing how gender is defined as a “social doing” based on the different roles and characteristics primarily used to characterize the different characters on the show. The definition of gender mainly comes from what people in society have assigned it to be, as portrayed on the show “Modern Family”, where the concept of gender as a social doing is advanced by boxing in its female and male characters into different traditional and stereotypical roles giving credence to the theory by West and Zimmerman as advanced in their article Doing Gender.Upon watching the show, I realized the consumerism culture has impacted the focus on feminism on popular …show more content…

However, the content and themes that relate to gender in various media forms are driven by the consumerist culture which is seen the TV series Modern Family. The various roles assigned to men and women in the show come out of a desire to appeal a wide audience so as to generate the ratings of the series. As a result, these ratings are able to gain the interest of corporates who bring revenue to the show through sponsorships and advertising. Therefore, those responsible for making this show have little choice but to customize their content to drive the consumerism culture thus killing any chance of advancing feminist ideas which are not so
