The Power of Literature
There are many reasons why literature is important to society. Literature can open the imagination of the reader, serve as a picture of the past, or as a reflection of the current political and social climate. Literature is often seen as books or poetry, while many people fail to realize that movies, song lyrics, plays, television and speeches can all be influential pieces of the literature, they all can change the way we think.
Fictional literature serves several social functions and can often help shape society. Opening discussion in a non-personal way, allowing for dialogue without others feeling attacked or analyzed. Literature can be linked to social change throughout history. The views and ideas expressed in a fictional narrative can shift how the reader feels about the topics they read about, a perfect example of this is the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Stowe’s book changed how white Americans viewed slavery making blacks be seen as people, and thereby evoking an outcry against slavery and playing a major role in the start of The American Civil War. The Influence may not always be one of a positive change as was seen in 1915, with the release of the film The Birth of a Nation. After the film was released with its racist sentiments the KKK saw a large renewal of its movement (Gottschall). Songs and stories about love and happily ever after or with a message of empowerment also have an influence on those who are exposed to them. The young girl waiting for her prince charming, the person holding out to find that perfect love story. The ability to continue to have a dream can be fed by the story of Cinderella, or the love that awakens you like Sleeping Beauty. Literature often offers an escape where the story ends with happily ever after or with justice prevailing, in a world that often has a very opposite outcome these stories are alluring and comforting to many
