Taliban is a terrorist group that took over Afghanistan, and took the lives of many innocent people. The book Under the Persimmon Tree, by Suzanne Fisher Staples, portrays the Taliban the same way that they are in real life. After 9/11 in war torn Afghanistan there was a girl named Najmah and her family. They had to deal with a terror organization the Taliban, who caused 9/11 attacks. The Taliban affected the two Main characters greatly in the book. Najmah lost most of her family and Nusrat lost her husband due to an airstrike intended for the Taliban. In the book, and in real life the Taliban are heartless, only benefit themselves, and affects people’s lives like Najmah and Nusrat. The Taliban affected both Najmah and nusrat’s life because they took away their family. For Najmah Baba-Jan, Habib, and Mada-Jan were all taken away due to the Taliban. Nusrat’s husband died because of an accidental airstrike that hit a hospital, but was intended to hit the Taliban. Everyone who was in the house when Nur and Najmah couldn’t " imagine how this robbed our hearts of all hope” (Staples). Nur and Najmah lost their father, mother, and baby brother all because of the Taliban. This terror organization has taken away so much from Najmah. She will never be the same thanks to the Taliban because of the effect that it has caused on Najmah. One day when Najmah woke up and went up a hill to take the goats to graze, she heard a loud thunderous noise. Then she realized a long black line of trucks came towards the village. She knew that it was the Taliban and was afraid "because she's afraid they'll hurt him-they might kill him”(16). Najmah was afraid of what would happen to her father and brother after they were taken from the Taliban. Yet, she didn’t know at the time that the Taliban would take a toll on her family. After her dad and brother left all she had was her mom and baby brother. They both died because of the Taliban. Groups such as the Taliban only care about their rules and cause. If people do not obey their laws you could be severely punished. The Taliban drew the attention of the world following the attacks on the world trade centers, they are extremely cruel towards women, and they treat their people cruelly.In real life the Taliban are nothing but trouble. The Taliban are extremely brutal towards women's rights and appearance. If a woman's heel clicked to loud she could get her hands cut off. Even though that " it's true that the Taliban leadership recently stated that has in fact, slightly eased their restrictions against women"(Gouda). Notice how it says slightly, but not mostly or majorly. This means that they really haven’t changed anything, but just small stuff. Women’s rights is unheard of in Afghanistan and some parts of Pakistan because of the Taliban. Taliban is not going to change its beliefs towards women any time soon and sadly some people it is starting to get worse. The Taliban is "a group of radically militant terrorists that reign terror on Afghanistan and more places" (Nguyen). In real life Afghanistan the Taliban basically go around and take things and wreak havoc on small villages and major cities. Afghan people’s lives have been affected greatly due to the Taliban.
