In World War One, trench warfare helped further the war of attrition by aiding technological innovations and developments, leading to many casualties. Trench warfare demanded commanders to rethink their tactics on advancing on the enemy, as it hindered a good portion of their weapons defenseless. Tanks were massive, almost invulnerable death machines that were designed to break through these trenches and inflict psychological damage upon the enemy. Chemical warfare was another innovation in World War One that sparked controversy with its brutal physical and psychological damage made to hurt the enemy’s morale, without harming their own men. These technological advances in weapons and war tactics pushed researchers to keep creating bigger and
When getting to somebody, the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover” really does hold true. In my life, I often come off as shy and reserved to someone who doesn’t know me. On the contrary, my friends describe me as a loudmouth who doesn’t stop asking unnecessary questions. As people I’ve known for some time, my friends know me for more than what first looks may tell. This theory is seen throughout society, far beyond the walls of John Jay High School.
If two people are hardly able to carry on a conversation, the society isn’t

Sadly, most people in The Brave New World lack the idea of embarrassment, and when one interacts with the other, it can be painful. When riding on a crowded elevator, Bernard Marx ran into Lenina Crowne, who wished to go for date said “That is, … if you still want to have me.” If Lenina had a proper sense of embarrassment, this wholly improper conversation would have been held elsewhere, aving Bernard from the trouble of this socially awkward situation. A sense of embarrassment, by making itself a way to harm us, brings us together in our wish to avoid it. This togetherness has helped everyone come through potentially socially crippling situations unharmed many times in our lives.
In Michael Nicholas’s “Why don’t People Listen?” he explains the process of communication and the reasons why people do not listen to each other. People assume the reason that they are not listening is because they are selfish or inconsiderate, but the problem is that the listening process is complex. For instance, the husband assumed that his wife was not interesting in his job, so he never communicated with his wife. Then Nicholas suggested to the husband that he should imagine talking to someone that he felt was normally interested in his job.
If I am trying to actively listen in an overstimulating/noisy environment, I tend to lose focus completely. The same instance happens when I have a lot of personal problems weighing on my mind. For example, stress, fatigue, and negative emotions are all energies that can rub off on other people. These characteristics of communication are all negative examples of physical and physiological obstacles to overcome when communicating. Personally, these obstacles include school duties, deadlines, work obligations, over-whelming environments, as well as maintaining time for personal relationships.
Social norms are rules that have been ingrained in society and people for hundreds of years. These societal rules can be anything from not talking to strangers on the subway to wearing weather appropriate clothes in public. Yet, when these societal norms are broken, the observers, as well as the person who destroyed the norm, are affected. Societal norms play in large role in how a person conducts him or herself when interacting with others. When deciding what social interaction, I would break, I wanted to do something that would be easy for me to fully commit to without facing too much embarrassment.

I am much more likely to have an in-depth, ongoing conversation with someone if we can easily have a nicely-flowing conversation. The effects from the lack of a bond being made can be anything from in the case of a job, a sale being less successful, to the prevention of a friendship being made. Or even, in the case of an education, someone may not understand the material because of the accent of a professor or another student. Such as in “Learning the Language” the terms used by medical professionals create confusion for those not yet fully integrated into the group. Such as when Klass says that she started working in the hospital in a “state of primeval innocence” and spent the beginning of her training learning the “endless jargon and
There are many different forms of communication these include visual, verbal and non-verbal. It is important that people take a look at their own communication skills and how these can be improved. Communication allows us to see things from another point of view; therefore one can get rid of any personal biases. Listening is a gift that should be appreciated, it lets people know what is going on around them in their society, such as people’s problems and struggles. Reflection on the 5-Days Journey to Become a Better Listener Throughout the 5-days practice of active listening and basic attending skills in daily conversations, it was easiest for me to practice empathy. I found it easy to perceive the situation through others’ eyes and perspectives in order to capture the accurate meaning when I was nonjudgemental and listened attentively to others. As a result, I was able to develop empathic rapport in which I accurately sensed and understood others’ concerns as well as feelings as compared to when I conversed without empathy, allowing my presumptions to affect my interpretation of others’ meaning due to the need for others to agree with my worldview. Besides that, I was able to practice basic empathy, which is the second level of empathy where I paraphrased
