I believe that the three most important strategies to successful labour relations with a unionized work force are:
1. Consistent and equitable application of policies, procedures including conformance with all applicable law.
2. Proactive performance and absenteeism management .
3. Strategic human resource planning from recruitment and retention.
The corporation must ensure that the proper policies are procedures have been implemented to ensure that the tools are in place for staff to abide by and for management to administer and enforce, when necessary. With that being said, I believe that both good and bad behaviours are identified and praised or disciplined as required. To simply complete a review once a year is not acceptable as too much time may have to passed to effectively manage a problem and commendable actions may be forgotten. It may be possible that the employee needs assistance in achieving the expectations of the corporation and performance management would be an essential communication tool to garner such open discussion in a safe environment. Also the ability to identify targets and implement an action plan which can improve motivation. Our performance management system is effective and also includes a section "as your manager, what can I do better?" This provides the employee an opportunity to respond if they feel comfortable in doing so but I request that my General Manager circulate my staff when completing my performance appraisal so that I can receive feedback on my leadership style, confidentially. This is not a corporate wide approach however I am of the opinion I can always improve as well to achieve the reasonable expectations of my employees. Of course, at times it is necessary to discipline and dismiss employees. It is not always an easy task, but required. With all this being said, documentation is the most critical
