Some tissue specific mucin expression are already known. For example the human MUC2 are expressed in intestine where it is the main secreted mucin. It is also found in the airways 6. MUC19 have been seen to be expressed in murine salivary gland and in salivary at higher levels than other secreted mucins but are still poorly studied 7. The human MUC5ac have been found in stomach, uterine, and at the respiratory system at high levels. But most extensively in stomach.8 MUC5b in human are expressed in the gallbladder and in the colon but not in the small intestine. It is also a major mucin expressed in the human respiratory system. Gallbladder is not part of this study and will therefore not be analyzed. 9 It is also a highly expressed mucin found in the respiratory tract, salivary gland and in endocervix 10. In the human respiratory system, the most abundant secreted mucins seem to be MUC5ac and MUC5b. 11, 12 Human MUC6 are found in several tissues such as in stomach, colon, gallbladder, and endocervix. MUC6 has also been observed during early development, and in the development of the Brunner’s gland in human fetus. 13

M. musculus are a common model organism because of the advantages of the similarities to humans. It is especially used for research within medicine and genetic research 15. G. gallus have long been used as a model organism, to model human diseases and for developmental biology 16. X. tropicalis, also known as the Western clawed frog are mainly used in research as a model organism to study early embryonic development and cell biology 17. D. rerio, also known as Zebrafish are used as a model organism within several research fields, toxicology and developmental biology are two examples 18. They share different levels of similarities towards humans and the human mucin genes. All have different advantages and disadvantages as model
