Upgrading Lightroom 4 to Lightroom 5 This is a very quick guide to upgrade your Lightroom 4 to Lightroom 5, if you’re considering moving up to the latest and greatest version of Lightroom. If you are afraid about upgrading, this guide or steps might help you to go through the process. Step 1. Back up and save all your existing catalogs Before you upgrade, it is always a good idea to make a complete backup process of the entire system before undertaking any major software change. If you’re using the right click trick on your existing Catalog, then the program will convert a copy for use with the new Lightroom 5 Catalog format. And if you’ll going to skip this step, then you might upgrade the wrong Catalog or worse scenario might end up creating a blank Lightroom 5 database. Once the Catalog upgrade process is complete you can go back and manually delete your older Lightroom. Step 4. Make sure that all images are visible and available Write down the total number of photographs in your upgraded catalog, then close LR5 and open LR4. You must look the total number of images in LR4 and make sure the numbers are match. Open again the LR5 and then go through some random images and open up 100% views to make sure that the images are all there. Step 5. Back up everything again If the upgrade process worked properly then you should have all of your old information plus the exciting new tools that Lightroom 5 brings to the game.
