“Almost 2 billion people are facing catastrophic or impoverishing health spending”(Cite). Many worldwide are not seeking the proper medical attention, this may happen because one may not be able to afford it and find themselves in poverty. The United States does not have one specific health care system. America provides private health coverage and government assisted coverage known as Medicaid and Medicare. Private insurance is not affordable for everyone and government assisted insurance is not offered to every citizen. The millions of people who do not have insurance are not receiving the proper medical treatment for their problems. Without insurance these people are subjecting themselves to pain, suffering, and even sometimes death. According to Benefits of a Universal Health Insurance System the author Alex Rajczi states, “The uninsured suffer serious problems. They don’t receive effective preventive care. They are less likely to have their medical conditions diagnosed. They forgo needed care and medications. Most importantly, more of them die, relative to insured people” (p. 118). The people in America who do not have insurance are less likely to seek medical attention, and these same people do not get the proper treatment because they cannot afford the large sums of money to pay for their hospital visit. The Universal Healthcare as Pandemic Preparedness article states, the COVID-19 pandemic caused many fatalities, but there were plenty of lives that could have been saved if they were insured. In 2020, there was a total of 211,897 lives that could have been saved if the United States provided global health coverage (Galvani, 2022). It is normal to assume that people with insurance do not suffer any kind of problems when it comes to their medical needs. There are people that have insurance, but their insurance does not cover every medical expense that they have, therefore they lack medical coverage. Author Rajczi states, some services might not be covered by the plans. The worst case would be some areas of service may be cut out completely (p. 121). Of the people insured in America, many of them have specific insurances that cover only a certain amount of services. Insurances may lack coverage of prescription, doctor visits, and medical bills. I have personally experienced this as my family has suffered from being underinsured. As a family we have insurance through BlueCross BlueShield Association, but the insurance does not cover every expense it needs to. My little sister just recently tore her anterior cruciate ligament and ended up having surgery to repair the ligament. When my mom received all of the medical bills she noticed that the insurance did not pay for everything that came with having the surgery and recovering. My mom was not aware of everything she had to pay for, but she could not let my sister suffer and not receive the medical attention she needed to be healthy again.
