Paragraph 1: Introduction - explain your lab. The lab that I chose to do was the “McGraw Hill Higher Education: Natural Selection - Virtual Lab.” I chose this lab because it was the one that most interested me, as I liked the format of the virtual lab. In this lab, I was able to manipulate both the environment and the allele frequency in order to record and investigate the generational breeding patterns of a group of organisms.
When we improve and evolve, when do we cease to be human? We have all the gadgets sci-fi movies from less than 50 years ago portrayed: video chat, drones, voice activation, virtual reality, and more. We are already currently creating the next miracle and great fear: self-learning robots. They will challenge our long-held confidence as the intellectual king as the offspring may surpass the parent. This program will allow me to work with those selected as some of the most advanced in their fields of science and technology, combining both factual evidence and differing analyzed perspectives to answer these questions on human identity.

Haugen and Susan Musser explores the concepts of the theory of “the Singularity” (Haugen and Musser 1) by Ray Kurzweil. “What is the Singularity…the Singularity is a future period during which the pace of technological change will be so fast and far-reaching that human existence on this planet will be irreversibly altered.” (Haugen and Musser 1). The concept of Singularity is so profound and deep reaching in it’s entirety of a theory, but Kurzweil boils Singularity over the next half a century down to 3 stages, genetics, nanotechnology, and robotics. He demonstrates how human life, natural adaption, and evolution can coincide with technology and usher in the next wave of humanity possible only through the exponential growth and advancement of technology in significant stages.

I conducted a lab that would investigate the question of whether or not camouflage favored natural selection. If an animal blended into its surroundings, I wanted to know if it could more effectively evade predators and survive as a species. I hypothesized that if I were a predatory bird hunting for mice in a field, then the mice that were camouflaged with their environment would be harder to find. The results did not support my hypothesis, as most of the mice (often more than 2/3) that had a similar appearance to the field they lived in were hunted, and did not escape predators.
