Governor's School (Engineering/Technology) Response- In all learning aspects of my life, I live by the principle that the exchange of knowledge insinuates a mutual growth. As people assist each other in developing personal experiences, they both growth in the expansion of perspective. That is precisely the reason why I would like to attend the Governor’s School of Engineering and Technology. This setting will not only me to communicate and develop with other students holding similar interests, but also those who are selected as some of the most advanced in these fields. People are always focused on being the creator; they invent amazing innovations, but no one knows how to apply them. Rather than create an unusable, new technology, I’d like to focus on creating new purposes for the technology. Often the simplest solutions are the most brilliant. To think of the way to utilize and advance what is at hand is the challenge. My interest in technology was sparked by my own curiosity and fascination; since the 6th grade I would always check Yahoo News’s Science and Technology tab, taking my newfound knowledge of amazing new advancements and sharing it with my family at the dinner table. I logged my future invention ideas in a journal- flying shoes to an orange peeler- dreaming of my distant future as an inventor. When I was able to act upon this interest was high school. After I applied and was accepted into the Advancement of Science and Technology division of my technical high school, I heard of the opportunity of Mechatronics research. Although some say that our progress is ridding us of humanity, I believe it is an extension of human evolution that actually evokes discovery of the definition of humanity. Humanity is explored as we stretch the miracles of engineering construction, made increasingly in the likeness of humans. Ethics comes into play not only in curiosity, but in taking human advantage. The price tag on humanity is placed by greed. Or is it survival of the fittest? When we improve and evolve, when do we cease to be human? We have all the gadgets sci-fi movies from less than 50 years ago portrayed: video chat, drones, voice activation, virtual reality, and more. We are already currently creating the next miracle and great fear: self-learning robots. They will challenge our long-held confidence as the intellectual king as the offspring may surpass the parent. This program will allow me to work with those selected as some of the most advanced in their fields of science and technology, combining both factual evidence and differing analyzed perspectives to answer these questions on human identity.
