In the article “Unteaching the Five Paragraph Essay”, Marie Foley infer that the five paragraph essay format is blameworthy of high school graduate unpreparedness for college coursework. Foley stated that “Many college freshman enter composition course alienated from writing”(P.2) Foley also claim that “teaching the five paragraph formula harms the student in some fundamental ways….i'll-preparing them for academic and real world writing”(P.3) This paper is going to analyse Marie Foley point of view on the five paragraph

Foley explain that the five paragraph format is so easy that student don't put much thought into their writing. Foley start her article by address her audience, stating “You may remember the poster...the five paragraph monster. He was an engagingly silly dinosaur with a menacing grin”(P.1) Foley facetiously talk about the five paragraph essay as something childish without much meaning. Foley is inferring the five paragraph is shown as a silly dinosaurs as something harmless, and easily done. In another word professional writers don't use the five paragraph essay formula. Foley resume by saying “The prefabricated structure invites students to fill the five slots with what they already know…..for the body of their essay, student tend to take any three loosely related ideas onto the prefabricated scaffolding” (P.1&2). Foley insight that the formula allows student to carelessly attach any ideas that they think are related into their essay. Foley argued that the formula limit student to only three ideas and does not help them explore new ideas and connections The strual of the five paragraph essay make it hard for student to incorporate new findings.
