I am sure that you all have been told to give back, but have you done it? A lot of ourselves make a promise that we ae going to do something good. Most of us don 't do it. In the short stories "Thank you Ma 'am" by Langston Huges and "Upon the Waters" by Joanne Greenberg, the main characters are people who sympathize with others and give back because they have been there. Both stories center around the theme of giving back by doing what you can because you know what they are going through.

If given the opportunity to teach someone a lesson, do it. Mrs. Jones displayed this theme in a way that made Roger feel welcome. Roger and Mrs. Jones meet in a way that you think wouldn 't end so well for Roger. Instead, Mrs. Jones took care of him by making him trust her. 'He did not trust the woman not to trust him. And he did not want to be mistrusted now, ' (pg. 130). Not only did she take care of him, she gave him the money he had been trying to steal. 'Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes. And next time, do not make the mistake of latching onto my pocketbook nor nobody else 's-because shoes come by devilish like that will burn your feet, ' (pg. 131). Mrs. Jones gave Roger what he wanted because she had been there and she sympathized with him. She also gave him an important lesson.

If you can sympathize with others, than you should help them out. No one should have to go through their troubles alone. They should have others to help them get through.
