What caused America to join the Vietnam war and was it our war to join in the first place? Some believe that it in our best interest to join the war, while others think that it was a bad idea to get mixed up in the war effort, look where it got us? America was nearly split, causing a lot of tension between us. All of this because of communism; which is scary for anyone who believes in a democracy. It had the United States fighting amongst itself and caused so many other wars. But the real question is: Was it worth it? Communism. That one word sent a whole nation into a frenzie. The fear of it sent us to war, when all that we wanted was to stop it from spreading. The domino theory was developed because of that fear; U.S. leaders believed that if Vietnam fell to communism, then the rest of southeast Asia would fall as well. After years in the war we were wondering if it had been a good idea to join the war and how to remove troops as quickly and as safely as possible. …show more content…

Communist leaded, Ho Chi Mihn, founded an organization called Viet Mihn and the nation of Vietnam was split. With the help of the U.S. government, anti-communist, Ngo Dinh Diem, took control of South Vietnam. His rule was very unpopular and monks set themselves on fire in protest, however the U.S. continued to support him, for fear of communism spreading. Those who opposed Diem formed an organized group who called themselves Vietcong. The Vietnamese people made a trail which they called the Ho Chi Minh trail, it was used to send troops and supplies to South Vietnam in order to help with the war effort. Unable to find and navigate the trail, the United States resorted to bombing the trail and several other places. Finally after several years of fighting, the war was resolved and a peace treaty signed. No one truly won, but there was a lot of people lost in the war
