In Ray Bradbury’s, Something Wicked this Way Comes, William Halloway hadn't been exposed to much as a child so when he fell victim to the carnival’s games, he often expressed an anxious and fearful tone. Will’s anxious tone is apparent when he and Jim stopped by the Theatre and he “…swallowed hard…” (Bradbury27) When Will, “…swallowed hard…” (27) his anxious tone was shown since that action is usually preformed in a time of nervousness and feeling of guilt. Will’s reaction at the Theatre demonstrates an anxious tone because he knew he wasn't supposed to be there and if he was caught peeking into a brothel he would not only be subject to utter disappointment, he would be punished by his parents as well. Having knowledge of her strong powers and ability to track people by scent, Will began to panic since he was helplessly stuck under a grille. He knew that if she found him, he would be no match to her which terrified him. Will also possessed a fearful tone when he was hiding from Mr. Dark in the library, “…eyes trembling with tears…”(219) His fear can be seen through the detailed description of how he cries in response to Mr. Dark’s comments, “…eyes trembling…”(219) Will is fearful in this situation because he heard everything Mr.Dark said about his mother going onto the carousel. Since he's seen someone almost die because of the carousel, the thought of someone he loves being harmed by it really upset him. The last instance in which Will displayed a fearful tone was when Mr. Dark tried to cover up Mr. Cooger’s obvious trips around the carousel, “…Will trembled…”(110) Will is showing a fearful tone by “…trembling…” since that is an action one performs when they are overtaken by fright.
