Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that determines right from wrong when looking at the outcomes. It believes that the most ethical choice is the one that will produce the greatest good for the greatest number. Every society develops, struggles to find and seeks solutions that will be best for society. What are the best laws, political style and what should be considered right and wrong and good or bad. Science says that for every action there is a reaction. Essentially, this means that there are consequences for all actions and choices, which calls for great consideration in regards to those acts being right or wrong, good or evil and or even worthwhile. Unfortunately, there is no universally accepted means by which attain these social goals that need to be achieved.
When soldiers are processed into the military they must begin to learn and live the Army values. Those values are loyalty, duty, honor, respect, selfless service, integrity, and personal courage ("Army Values," n.d.). These are drilled in to the hearts and minds of every soldier even though at times some of these soldiers end up in ethical dilemmas. The reflective observation of the different examples of ethical problems can occur as a young soldier, a leader, or simply because of environmental influence. As a young soldier, many are nervous and scared of management and not meeting expectations.
Therefore, this form of utilitarianism highlights that the most important is the happiness of everyone and not the happiness of any particular person. Utilitarianism seeks the greatest happiness for the entire group ((Williams & Arrigo, 2012). These school policies can be considered utilitarianism since they maximize the good consequences of the entire student population at school. The policies do not produce happiness for all people involved, but it does produce happiness for most people involved. A number of problems surround the second question; the most obvious of which are limited time, the limited capacity of human foresight to calculate the maximum number of happiness, and the inability of the theory to advise on the time frame utilitarianism is to be applied to; how do you know the maximum number of happiness for the next 10 years doesn’t mean greater overall unhappiness in the next 50 years, so what time period should one keep in mind when considering an issue from a utilitarian stand point, 1 year, 5 years, 10, 20? This lack of clarity further adds to the impractical nature of the ideology. There are a myriad number of situations which seem very difficult to resolve without employing utilitarian principles and a very good example is the widespread use of utilitarian principles in bioethics. The best example here would obviously be the famous case of the conjoined twins Mary and Jodie. The facts in front of the court indicated that Mary was the parasitic twin who shared a heart with Jodie.
There are many things in this world these days that are entirely unethical and have strayed so far off course that they are just unbelievable. The US military is a prime example of and idea getting derailed and turned so in humane. Many soldiers and recruits in the US military are brutally assaulted by their superiors or other colleagues. Evidence has shown that a multitude of recruits have dropped out over the past 20 years, with each year gaining in drop-outs. The US military is no longer about fighting for freedom, and the fact that many young men are losing their lives over a false cause every year needs to be attended to.
The main principle of utilitarianism is happiness. People who follow this theory strive to fulfill the “ultimate good”. The “ultimate good” is defined as ultimate pleasure with out any pain. It is said that the pleasure can be of any quantity and any quality, but pleasures that are weighted more important are put at a higher level than others that are below it.
