Stephen King once said: “Description begins in the writer’s imagination, but should finish in the reader’s.” In this quote, Stephen King shows that it is up to the readers to determine how they will use the author’s ideas and themes and relate it to their life. After all, authors write their books and portray their values in a manner where the reader has to discover what the book means to him and decide what those values truly mean. An examination of the themes in Ender’s Game reveals that Scott Orson Card shares the values of bravery, love, knowledge, and isolation with the books, To Kill A Mockingbird, Romeo and Juliet, Fahrenheit 451, and Ender’s Game, and that Card defines each of those values differently. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses the love shared between Romeo and Juliet to show how moving love is and how deeply it can affect us. The strong affection Romeo and Juliet have for one another was ultimately their undoing. When Romeo heard news of Juliet’s death, Romeo rushed to the apothecary and asked him, “Let me have A dram of poison...That the life-weary taker may fall dead.” (V. i.63-65). Romeo was ready to commit suicide out of his love for Juliet, thus showing the power of love. In Ender’s Game, Card displayed all those values in both a positive and negative light, leaving it up to the reader to decide how they want to view that value. In my opinion, I believe that bravery is the most important value because having bravery will allow you to become successful. In all four books, having bravery is very important, as the characters would not have been able to do anything without it. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus needed to be brave in order to support Tom Robinson and the black community when his whole town was prejudiced against them. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo was brave enough to sacrifice his life since Juliet died. In Fahrenheit 451, Montag was very courageous for the reason that he acquired the strength to sacrifice his previous life in order to restore knowledge to the nation. Finally, in Ender’s Game, Ender was very brave when he fought Stilson and Bonzo, seeing that he was clearly at a physical disadvantage, yet he still fought them because he believed that he had a chance of
