Recently, I have read a poem named “In Flanders Field”, written by John McCrae, a Canadian writer. The major theme of the poem is war. Because the poem was written in the year of 1915, during the World War I. At that time, McCrae, as a doctor, joined the army and fought against the Belgian in Flanders, which was located in the northern part of France and the southwest of Belgium.
The poem “Deer Hit” had many themes, but there was only one central theme. The central theme is that you make your own decisions. An example is in line one where the narrator says “You’re seventeen and tunnel vison drunk, swerving you father’s Fairland wagon home.” This represents the theme because the narrator made his own decision to get drunk and to drive, now whatever consequences happen to him is solely his own fault. Another example is in line 9, “Glitter and crunch of broken glass in your lap, deer hair drifting like dust.”
In reading this book I found that the heart song was illustrated in a way to pull at the heart strings. I was captivated from the moment Charging Elk woke in the hospital in Marseille, unknowingly reading a form of rebirth. What follows is a fascinating account of the adventures of a true stranger in a strange land. Watching, in my mind, the play that James Welch built, cast, and set to life was a beautiful experience.

“The Poem You Asked For” was written by Larry Levis and was from his first collection called “Wrecking Crew.” Wrecking Crew is a book of short poems employing a disembodied voice and distilled imagery. This poem is a personification, and the poet personified the poem as it’s significant other. In the beginning of the poem, the poet tried everything to make the person happy but it rejected everything. In the poem he says, “I tried giving it water/
Kay Ryan’s poem, “Blanduer”, describes how a faithful believer in God can be conflicted between the beauty and power of God’s creation, and the struggles that His created world causes in life. In this poem, Ryan is asking God to be less dramatic with His creation and to make life a little simpler by easing the burden human’s bear. The feeling of conflict can be seen in her use of words. Denotation is defined as “the ambiguous or dictionary meaning of words” (Mays 550).
Both stories, well, one is a article and the other is a poem. Both of them talk about bullying, except the article I read is about cyberbullying and the ”Watch Out for the Claws” is just bullying in school and the poem is explaining the personalities of a bully. The poem uses cats as their examples of bullies, but the article uses real people and their stories of what happened to them when they were cyberbullied. Another similar thing is that both of them are in second person. The article is about some countries banning Facebook, because of the crimes of people
Prologue The Barren Hope of a Shaman Mardoc “You will not save them all,” Its mentor had once said. “If you save one, rejoice in them as I have in you.”
How many of you have pets? Now, how many of you have dogs? I have had numerous pet, everything from cats and dogs to guinea pig and parrots. Of the countless dogs I have had one stands out the most. My favorite Chiweenie named Bambam, but I call her Bammy.
The poem Mother, Any Distance Greater Than a Single Span, written by Simon Armitage, is about a child and his relationship with his mother. Throughout the poem, we see their connection naturally develop and change. As the child gets older and becomes more independent he wants to leave the ‘birds nest’, yet the mother doesn’t want to fully let go. Armitage successfully uses the language features of symbolism, allusion, metaphor, and rhyme to influence me into feeling love, sadness, and hope towards the mother throughout the poem.
Groundling, where fore art thou groundling. In the epitaph, “My Love for You Is So Embarrassingly” by Todd Boss, the speaker is stuck in an internal ponder between his head and his heart. The title alone emphasizes how grand his love is for the auditor. Then, as the poem progresses he makes a point to show how devotion is taken for granted. This poem differs from your traditional love poem because the speaker challenges his feelings.
The book I have chosen is Joyful Noise Poems for Two Voices by Paul Fleischman and illustrated by Eric Beddows. Joyful Noise is a compilation of poems that includes various insects’ perspective presented in an educational and humorous way. Each poem is presented in a unique technique as the book itself instructs two voices to read the poems. There are 14 poems in total and each have an insect to represent the poem in a beautiful way by telling stories through an insects perspective. When I read this book, I was very impressed with it.
“Clearly animals know more than we think, and think a great deal more than we know. ”- Irene M. Pepperberg. This quote shows that animals are smarter than we think and know more than we think they know. In the two poems “A Blessing” and “Predators”, there are many ways that they are similar and different.
In conducting our research, we discovered that modern poetry originates in North America, United States to be more specific. Even though these poets were spoken word poets, their poetry was resistance poetry and an expression of rebellion. As we noted before that the origins of this contemporary form of performance poetry is found in oral tradition of African Americans, the descendants of the African slaves. We also discovered that the poets of the 1950s and 1970s used their poetry as a voice to express the needs of the black American people. Contemporary spoken word poetry started in America, in the 1950s as an underground political movement.
