Even though he lost the 1840 presidential election, Van Buren received 40,000 more votes than he had in his 1836 victory. In subsequent years, historians have come to regard Van Buren as integral to the development of the American political system. Van Buren was the first President not born a British subject, or even of British ancestry.

In the short story “Royal Beatings," Alice Munro utilizes the juxtaposition of antithetical words to emphasize the ability of romanticism to alter an individual’s perception of reality. One of the most essential components of this piece is the complex interplay that develops between the embellished “Royal Beatings” (117) constructed in Rose’s imagination and the brutally unpleasant events that transpire in actuality. Scientists have constantly been striving to better understand the brain and how it functions. The brain is an amazing organ that controls and moderates so many different things. Your body temperature, your reasoning, your dreams, your movement, your blood rate, it accepts massive amounts of information from your different senses, (seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting), and it does all this in a way that we hardly even know it is happening. Many scientists have been trying to discover the secrets of the brain and understand the differences between a normal brain, and a brain with disorders.
