So far in AP Language and Composition, we have learned how to critically analyze texts using rhetorical and literary analysis. I feel comfortable with literary analysis because of how frequently and often I have been doing it in the past couple of years. Regarding rhetorical analysis we have learned diverse types of appeals used in rhetoric, appealing to a reader’s emotions using pathos, an ethical appeal using ethos, or appealing to a reader’s logic using logos. These skills and concepts are completely new to me and I am still beginning to understand how to use these appeals in my writing strategically. However, I feel more confident in finding these appeals in other rhetorical texts, including ads and speeches, because of how much practice
I have chosen this article because the tittle seems very enticing. I want to know deeper information on how we can read people’s thoughts just by looking at them. I am also interested with the psychological issue so I decided to read and learn through this article. 4. Explain briefly in four or five sentences what the article is about.
In Florence Kelley’s heart wrenching call for awareness of child labor she uses quite a few rhetorical devices. An anaphora is the most recognizable as she’s trying to nail in how she would could be helping the children. Pathos is another of her persuasion methods used in her tone. Kelley also uses a fair amount of imagery throughout the passage. First and foremost, Kelley’s use of an anaphora is what really pulls the audience’s attention.
So, Coop, you seem to take an exorbitant interest in my crush, I figure I'll consult you on how to proceed with her. As you already know, her response to my avowal was disappointingly neutral; no affirmation of rejection nor acceptance. However, being the pessimist I am, I chocked it up to a subtle declination. This is where your knowledge of this ends, but I guess I'll catch you up. I don't want things to be awkward between me and my crush (henceforth referred to as Pocc), in that if I pursue a relationship and she has no interest, she may leave the group of friends we have, or I may do the same due to how uncomfortable it will be (this is, of course, a product of my always assuming the worst will happen).
Political ads are a way to persuade you to vote for one political party or the other. Every 4 years, there is an election between democrats and republicans that will help decide the next president of the United States. These campaigns between the democrats and the republicans are the strategies candidates use to win your vote. During the election season, there is many speeches made by both the people who are running for president. Debates between the two sides can sway your vote to one side or the other depending on what the candidates say.
The Use of Rhetorical Devices in the “Google Home” Super Bowl Commercial Companies and other forms of media strategically use the three rhetorical appeals, ethos, pathos, and logos, to market goods and/or promote ideas. The appeals have been used for centuries are still prevalent in all types of modern day propaganda. If used correctly, ethos, pathos, and logos can be used as clever tactics to engrain information into the brains of consumers. One of the more notable ways that brands use these appeals are commercials. Google, the world’s most famous multinational technology company, used the three appeals to reach success.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
A major theme in A&P is personal freedom. Throughout the story Updike uses metaphor for all elements in the story to implies the theme. At the beginning of the story, Sammy uses sarcastic tone to describe the customers as “sheep” and “houseslaves” which implies he is different from them in mindset. The way how Sammy talks about others shows his intellectual mind. He is not same as Stokesie who wants to be a manager one day.
Through Thoreau’s entire essay, “Reading”, revolves around the idea of reading being the way to immortality. He calls for a new society, one that does not focus on the materialistic things in life, but instead on creating an intellectual human culture. Thoreau believes that neither property nor money are true inheritances, but that “books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations.” (82). This passage demonstrates Thoreau’s idea of society’s way of aiming too low, instead of striving to read well.
Have you ever wonder how does a crime scene investigator, known as a CSI, discover blood spatter on different fabrics, which is not visible to the human eye? The key is bluestar. According to the article “Influence of Bluestar Reagent on Blood Spatter Stain of Different Fabrics” by Arnon Grafit, bluestar is a “luminol-based reagent that is applied by spraying on surface.” Not only that, but “it helps obtain DNA and to analyze spatters patterns. By analyzing the article the reader is able to understand how bluestar works through the rhetorical techniques used.
This article is talking about human trafficking in Cambodia and Myanmar centered in south East Asia off the boarder of Thailand. It broadens the horizon for human trafficking in the aspects that it is not only sex trafficking that is occurring, but also labor trafficking and trafficking of human beings for body parts. I plan to use this article in my essay to broaden the horizon of human trafficking and to link human trafficking back to slavery. Quoting from the author he/she states “Captives from Myanmar and Cambodia are sold to captains on Thai fishing boats to work for months or even years on the boats with little or no payment, with long working days up to 20 hours a day under grave conditions.” The author of this article uses diction such
