One thing that people on the vegan diet can most of the time relate to, is the popular response that is received when explaining the choice to eat a plant-based diet. Upon telling my Grandma about my diet change she responded commonly, "but sweetie, you will not receive enough protein, or where in the world are you getting your protein from if you are not eating meat"? No one seems cares for your protein intake, until you became vegan. There is a negative rebuttal to just how much protein vegans are deprived of. However it came about, the public seems to be uninformed and somewhat in-the-dark to the real truths of nutrition behind the meat and vegan diet. In the film "What the Health" Kip Anderson travels to big corporations such as the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association to interview the directors of these organizations. A person needs .8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. Therefore, for someone who is 90 kilograms (200 pounds) needs to consume 70 grams of protein. This is a very easy task to accomplish. Basically, because protein is heavily advertised, the public is essentially over receiving their directed protein intake. Malnutrition because of inadequate protein happens, almost without exception, but strictly in developing countries only. With 16 million of the American population being vegetarian and about half of that eating wholly plant based, protein needs are obviously being finely met. With so many people refraining from animal products over the course of a decade there has been no connection between the diet and the loss of protein or health in these individuals.
