Divergent is a dystopian novel written by Veronica Roth. The narrator is the main character, Beatrice "Tris" Prior. Beatrice speaks in the present tense while her mother, Natalie, cuts her hair. Beatrice explains that her "faction" only allows its people to look at their reflection once a year because they avoid vanity. Her reflection shows a narrow face, wide, round eyes, long, chestnut color hair and a long, thin nose. Although her faction does not celebrate birthdays, she estimates her age to be around sixteen. Beatrice feels nervous about taking "the aptitude test". As Beatrice reveals, the aptitude test it is an exam that kids who are of age take to determine which faction he or she belongs in. Five large bowls representing each faction are found in the center of the room. The participants must cut their hand with a knife and drop their blood into the bowl of their choosing. Marcus begins the ceremony by sharing the history of the faction system. In the past, people blamed the discordance in the world on human behavior and created the faction system to eliminate conflict. After a while, Caleb is called up to the front. Without hesitation, he chooses Erudite. Abnegation looks away in disappointment. Beatrice is called and finalizes her decision. She drops her blood into the fiery Dauntless coals. Consequently, Andrew looks at Beatrice with obvious sadness, but Natalie expresses a supportive smile. They say goodbye and she leaves with her new faction. Beatrice's first task as a Dauntless initiate is to leap onto a moving train car. She starts losing hope and strength before a Candor girl helps her onto the train. The Candor girl introduces herself as Christina, a tall girl with dark brown skin and short hair. Upon arriving at Dauntless headquarters, their second task is to jump from the train onto a rooftop.
