VETERAN (WENY) - A new compressor station is anticipated to be built this November in the Town of Veteran, near Horseheads. However, some residents in the area fear their health with be sacrificed for a few extra tax dollars. It 's called the Dominion New Market Project. It 's meant to improve access to natural gas to customers in Upstate New York. The project would construct a 11,000 horsepower gas compression station on 89 acres in the Sullivanville area of the Town of Veteran. The compression station would increase the flow of natural gas through roughly 200 miles of existing pipeline. However, Dominon Spokesperson Frank Mack, say the company has a longstanding safety record and has to comply with safety regulations like air and noise quality controls put in place by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. "We obviously can 't assure or guarantee safety but we do have a variety of programs and methods that asses the integrity of the pipeline," Say Mack. He continues saying they have someone who monitors the pipelines 24/7 and have ongoing areal and foot patrols around teh compressor station. The natural gas will go to National Grid distribution areas. For allowing the compressor station to be built, Dominon will pay tax revenue to Chemung County, the Town of Veteran and local school districts. At this time Dominon, doesn 't have an estimated dollar amount for how much that would be but says according to the National Grid, the New Market Project will save its customers more than $20 million over the next 10 years by delivering a domestic supply of natural gas instead of getting it from Canada. The project already got approval from the Chemung County and Town of Veteran Planning Boards as well as
