Veterinary Nurse Internship

Although I am only halfway through my internship program, looking back at the past 8 weeks, I feel I have already accomplished and learned so much, and continue to do so every day. Since the first day of my internship, I have been working very closely with the veterinary nurses and veterinarians of SingVet (Singapore Veterinary Animal Clinic) to familiarize myself with the procedures as followed by the clinic, as well as the clinic’s functioning and culture. Having taken on the role of a veterinary nurse which involves the combination of elements of many disciplines such as nursing, laboratory work, imaging and customer service, I have not only picked up veterinary clinical related skills, but also social and communication skills.

Firstly, in terms of nursing, I have learnt the fundamentals and basics of providing great patient care for most, if not all common companion animals. After my first week it was clear that more so than a learning experience, this internship is an opportunity to form relationships with people in the veterinary industry. Hence, I would consider one of my greatest accomplishments so far to be having able to develop good working relationships with the veterinarians and veterinary nurses of SingVet; another, having able to adapt quickly to my new work environment, and gain the trust and confidence of the veterinarians and veterinary nurses.
