Video games have been around for a long time. In fact, they have been around for about 66 years. The first video game is said to be Pong, but there might have been others before it. The first video game consoles were the Magnavox Odyssey and the original Atari, which were released in 1972. Pong was one of the most successful games on the Atari. It was so popular that people went to the bar just to play the game. By 1974, Pong had sold more than 8,000 units. When Home Pong had a Sears release in 1975, it became in instant success. More than 150,000 units were sold during the holiday season. The Magnavox Odyssey was also a very successful video game console in 1972. It had sold nearly 100,000 units by the end of the year. For 2 years, the video game industry went down. Then, in 1986, Nintendo released the NES, or otherwise known as the Nintendo Entertainment System. This system was “the best-selling gaming console of its time,” according to en.wikipedia.org. The NES helped the video game industry recover after what had happened a year before. The NES allowed third-party developers to make their own games for the console which would then be submitted to Nintendo, then released to the public. IGN named the NES the “single greatest video game console in history” in 2009. Obviously, the console was not perfect, there were some flaws. For example, if someone kept taking out and inserting the cartridges into the system, it could cause the contact pins to bend. After the NES, Nintendo released the Game Boy in 1989.
