The movie Selma is interesting as it follows major character’s perspectives of the events that occurred in Selma. The viewpoints change every so often. There are two main perspectives that this movie follows. That of Martin Luther King Jr’s and the president at the time President Lyndon B Johnson. It also follows other key events such as the murder of Jimmie Lee Jackson. The majority of the time when it switches perspective to President Johnson it is after a major event or when he is reading the newspaper and the headline is of a movement that has something to do with Martin Luther King Jr. Different perspectives on an issue can make us see thee other side of the story. David Oyelowo’s tone of voice conveys so much emotion and makes you almost believe that you are right there in the marches. My favourite part is after the murder of Jimmie Lee Jackson when they are all gathered in the church and Martin Luther King Jr is giving a speech about the death of Jimmie. He says “Who murdered Jimmie Lee Jackson? Every white lawman who abuses the law to terrorize. Every white politician who feeds on prejudice and hatred. Every white preacher who preaches the Bible and stays silent before his white congregation. Who murdered Jimmie Lee Jackson? Every Negro man and woman who stands by without joining this fight as their brothers and sisters are brutalized, humiliated,and ripped from this Earth.” by the end of this everyone is if anything more determined to get civil rights because it has killed a civilian. The amount of emotion that I felt during this speech was amazing.
