Vincent Van Gogh was born in Holland in 1853. He followed his family tradition by joining the international art dealer Goupil & Company in the Hague as a junior apprentice on July 30, 1869. This way, he had branches in Paris, London, and Brussels. In August 1880, at the age of twenty-seven, Van Gogh decided to become an artist. He began to copy drawings, and reproductions after other artists. He enjoyed the work of Jean-François Miller, whose paintings were pleasant and neat. One of my favorite paintings by Vincent would have to be The Garden of Doctor Gachet. It was done in 1890. It has been said that Gogh painted in several times, but only on his final copy did he make an attempt to stylize the forms and outline the shapes of the plants. This self-portrait was painted shortly before Van Gogh’s departure for the south of France, at a time when his mood was clearly on the verge of depression. He uses bright colors and lively brushstrokes. This painting makes me wonder what is on the canvas that he is working on. You can view the sadness in his eyes, and relate to his situation. This painting displays harmony because he looks very focused and in tune with his work. Lastly, many appreciate Gogh’s oil canvas painting, Starry Night over the Rhône River. It was painted in Paris in 1888. He completed this just a few months after his arrival in Arles. This painting displays the reflection of the lights of the town on the Rhône River, underneath a clear, starry night. This was one of the first examples of him working from the imagination. This reminds me of the Saint Joseph River in downtown Jonesville at night time. This painting displays movement because there are two characters walking and the river is flowing into the
