Cruelty exists in many forms, just as it has a multitude of affects on different people and characters. In both The Poisonwood Bible by Barbra Kingslover and Macbeth by William Shakespeare, the nature, will, and personalities of the characters are put to the test in response to cruelty. As demonstrated in both of these novels, cruelty can shape a character by revealing the true nature of the victim and bringing guilt upon the perpetrator, which proves that cruelty is the driving force in character development. In The Poisonwood Bible, Nathan Price brings his family to the Congo on a conversion mission, and it quickly becomes obvious that he cares more about the mission than his own family.

Can we categorise violence into honourable and dishonourable actions? In Williams Shakepear’s Macbeth, the audience follows the character Macbeth as he commits various acts of violence to secure his goal of becoming king of Scotland. The play begins with Macbeth being considered a man of great standing and honour, while it ends with him being seen as a tyrant who needs to be removed from the throne. Macbeth commits murders throughout the entirety of the play allowing us to compare the reasoning behind his actions from when he was stable to when he became irrational. The story of Macbeth allows the audience to differentiate between the honourable and dishonourable violence, while also giving an example to how living in a tyranny country
Psychological paralysis where the victim becomes passive, desperate and defeatable is caused by BWS. Battered Women/person syndrome is caused by a long-term abuse ( Domestic violence) that primarily leads the victim to “learned helplessness” a belief that the victim is incapable of changing the reality. Instead, accept their phenomenon the way it is hoping that the abuser will eventually stop hurting the victim. The whole episode can be analyzed into the cycle of violence, where a three-phased series of events follow each other. Rose the narrator and protagonist of “Royal Beating” experiences each phase in the cycle within a timely manner.
Often in works of literature, a character deceives or tricks other people. In the play “Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare, Petruchio does just that, he tricks and deceives his wife Katherine. To deceive someone is to cause (someone) to believe something that is not true, typically in order to gain some personal advantage. He deceives Katherine after they get married, he uses it as a part of his taming plan. Petruchio deceives Katherine by denying her food and sleep through intimidation and power control to tame her and give the play its title.

Darkness can be seen in many literary works with the intention of showing a turn for the worse in many characters lives. In Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare displays examples of violence in order to show audience members how Macbeth’s desire for kingship, led to his demise through his guilt. The use of blood, nature and supernatural elements are used as a way of symbolizing Shakespeare's theme of Macbeth’s guilt. Is one man’s desire for nobility worth the cost of others lives? In Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus, the audience encounters a dreadful array of violent acts, increasing in brutality and volume, which conclude in Tamora eating her own children ‘baked in a pie | Whereof their mother has daintily fed’ (5.3.59-60). The vivid representation and portrayal of violence, which begins with state-mandated execution, extends to rape and mutilation, and culminates in cannibalism, has earned Titus Andronicus the reputation of the most violent play written by Shakespeare. Hamlet features several acts of cruelty that lead to many of the events that occur. The meaning of cruelty throughout the play suggests that cruelty does not do good towards anybody and only has negative effects. The characters help portray this by their actions and immediate reactions. Cruelty leads to the downfall of each character. Cruelty is first shown by Hamlet, who has just returned from England.
Twisted Tales from Shakespeare by Richard Armour, theatricalized by Rhett Bryson, fully committed to the grotesque, the outrageous, and the attempt of the Actor characters to tell the stories clearly. The cast’s commitment to these tasks were what made the ensemble complete and made them seem as if they were in the same world. Twisted Tales, much like in Shakespeare’s plays, had groups of characters that behaved in certain ways physically and vocally; these groups were the Professors and the Actors. Eliza Kate Leiter’s Narrator was calm and collected, with gliding hands. She kept it steady in comparison to Dayanari Umana’s Footnoter, who was much more like the actor herself, light and flicky.
In Shakespeare’s, Hamlet, revenge plays a major role in how the characters act. They base their actions off of getting revenge. Hamlet, Laertes, and Young Fortinbras all are trying to get revenge for their fathers. All three of the characters use different methods for getting revenge and they all get different results. Shakespeare uses these three characters to show that revenge can consume you and that is all that you want and he shows how harmful it can be.
Shakespeare’s ability to illustrate the battle between good and evil is arguably one of his best skills as a writer. Incorporating the art of the morality play, he shows the battle of these two forces for a man’s soul. But the beauty of his writing comes to light in how he shows this process. In both Macbeth and Othello, Shakespeare portrays evil as corrupting, while the source of evil differs.

Relationship abuse is a pattern of coercive and abusive behaviors. Most of the time when abuse goes on during a relationship, it is kept a secret because the victim is afraid of telling. The behaviors that go on are to maintain total control over a spouse or an intimate partner. Relationship is a choice or in other words it’s a learned behavior. Most abusers believe that they can do what they want and get away with it.
