What if there was no such thing as theater or singing? What if there were no books? What if there was no art? Theater defines Costa Rica when it comes to performing. Theater has changed many people's lives. Dance is a way of showing emotion through the body. Art is something people use to express themselves, and their lives on paper. Although literature may not be meaningful, it shows (in depth) what life is like in Costa Rica. The fine arts transform Costa Rica into something beautiful. Performing arts have set high standards, made Costa Rica very popular, and have become a way for people to express themselves. There are many different types of performing arts, some being dance, music, and theater. There are more theater companies per capita in Costa Rica than any other country in the world. People express themselves through acting, music, and dance. No matter which production (puppetry, comedy, mime, drama, etc.) each show is very inexpensive. The price of going to the theater once a week in Costa Rica for a year is equal to the price of going to one Broadway show. People can save a lot money this way! The theaters are also very welcoming to tourists, most of the shows are easy to understand even if a tourist cannot speak Spanish. Also, the most famous type of music in Costa Rica is classical music. Classical music was started in Costa Rica, in 1970, by the National Orchestra Symphony. "Of all the genres of music in Costa Rica, Costa Rica might be best known for their classical music on the world stage" ("Costa"). Classical music has a very big amount of support by the government. Literature is not a way of making money in Costa Rica, and doesn't have a positive impact. In the past, the literature in Costa Rica has mainly focused on life in Costa Rica, and/or the social themes of Costa Rica. "Works from this period reflected the almost grim lifestyle in Costa Rica and how the population was insistent on seeking change" ("Literature"). Although some say the literature in Costa Rica lacks meaning, others disagree. "This is due to the lack of experience and meaning, and the wisdom, subtlety, and romanticism" ("Literature"). Also, some say that literature gives their life new perspectives, and most say that Costa Rica's literature, specifically poetry, influences other countries. Now, there are more writers because they have a wider range of things to write about, rather than the lack of writers in the mid 1900's.
