n Russia, Ksenia Infinity and her lesbian lover are traveling by air when they notice Russian Politician, Vitaly Milonov, on the plain a few rows behind them. Milonov is the political motivation behind the laws in Russia banning “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors”. Milonov feels anyone with any connection to the LGBTQIA community is literally psychologically ill and needs to be taken away from society and placed in an asylum. The two women, knowing Milonov’s history and being lesbian activists, embrace in a kiss while taking a celebratory selfie and upload the image onto social media. The image has an overwhelming global positive response from its viewers. Milonov believes Ksenia and her lover are being “funny” or playing a joke; he wonders how “funny” they will think it is when he enacts his powers of political authority. His derogatory and sarcastic response to the pic on social media is to threaten to close down “their” gay club in St. Petersburg and ban “them” from meeting in public places. Milonov recommends these “psychologically sick” individuals “go to the United States”. (Burrows, 2015).

These are the individuals who, over time, will change Russia’s attitudes and opinions towards gender orientation and sexual identity. Russia recently decriminalized homosexuality in the mid 1990’s, some time will need to pass before the culture will become more openly accepting. Recognition of sexual orientation outside of a man and a woman, for Russia, is a drastic change to their norm. In reality this change has always been present, but only concealed from mainstream society.
