The greatest model of the past is Dracula. Braudy gives detail relaying to us that Dracula’s origin story was based off “Vlad the Impaler” who was “defending the Christian Romania”. Showing historical facts based on a religion that Vlad defended and he protected, which states his savior offered up his body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. Dracula, and all other vampires, source of food is blood, showing an origin story instead of just an idea, turned it into a fable with a drastic twist of a nightmarish character. Sherry Yielding Karen Sanders English 1003 April 9, 2016 Vlad the Impaler and Bram Stoker’s Dracula Vlad the Impaler was a man who lived in and ruled Wallachia, a territory in modern-day Romania, in the 1400's. There are many differing myths and legends surrounding his life and also, his death. Was Vlad actually a vampire or simply a man with a figurative thirst for blood?
In medieval times, torture was used to punish criminals, deter crime, and gather information. There were many different types of tortures, most of which were brutal and painful. At the time, torture was deemed necessary to maintain order. Laws were harsh and torture was severe, but effective form of punishment. Despite its effectiveness, torture was often an unfair and extremely cruel punishment, and should have been eliminated in all forms.
Throughout Maus, Vladek is telling his son Artie about how he survived the Holocaust. He explained to Artie that before the war, life was good for him and his family. He tells him everything about his experience during the war as well, from the relationship he had with his family and Anja, to his friendships with both gentiles and Jews, to things he might of found or kept throughout the war. However now, a few decades after the war, Vladek’s lifestyle has changed drastically from during the war, and even from before the war. Vladek’s friendships, relationships, and everyday life has changed due to the Holocaust and WWII.
The people he captured would be gruesomely murdered. He impaled people and left their bodies on sticks in the yards around his castle. “His penchant for impaling his enemies on stakes in the ground and leaving them to die earned him the name Vlad the Impaler. He inflicted this type of torture on foreign and domestic enemies alike: notably, as he retreated from a battle in 1462, he left a field filled with thousands of impaled victims as a deterrent to pursuing Ottoman forces.” (Pallardy).
Vampires are a classic and incredibly versatile kind of monster across all kinds of media, certainly not just limited to videogames. A big part of that undoubtedly stems from how many cultures around the world have variations on the vampire present in their folklore – usually in the form of some sort of otherworldly something that swoops in and saps the life force of humans and/or animals before slipping off into the night when they've finished. Sometimes these beings are little more than monstrous animals, sometimes they're overdramatic goth fashion plates, and sometimes they're just regular people who like to chill out with a bloody mary every now and then. Carmilla is the most obvious counter to the assumption that vampire horror stories began with Bram Stoker. In fact, Western Europe had been raking it in for at least a century before Count Dracula, thanks to terrors stemming from religious misgivings about the crazy amount of imperialism going on at the time. One of the most common as well as interesting types of legends is about vampires. Vampires have changed through the time from the myth, the legendary feared creatures, to those that are easily seen in the world nowadays
Dracula is about vampires in general, the myth, the mystery and the horror. Even though Dracula wasn’t the first vampire story, it was the first really popular one. Throughout the novel, the author, Bram Stoker, portrays many different aspects of women's roles in the 19th century. With the use of imagery and symbolism, the theme of sexuality and gender roles has an enormous presence in the novel. Social gender roles of women and men during the Victorian Era were very strict and looked upon differently than any other time period.
The topic I have chosen for my essay is how Dracula is meant to remind society of the importance of religion, specifically Christianity, in Stoker’s time. I intend to do this through analyzing symbols in Dracula, drawing connections between these symbols and Christianity, and analyzing the implications Stoker attempts to make. I chose this topic because vampires and their sacrilegious implications, such as burning when touching a cross, have always been of interest to me, hence why I chose to study Dracula in the first place. My thesis is: Stoker uses Count Dracula as symbol to represent what society may become if they abandon religious beliefs.
A good answer is given by Carol A. Senf in his book The Vampire in the 19th Century English Literature where he notes that such beliefs go far beyond the place itself, and that “the vampire was simply one more example of a mysterious subject that appealed” (1988: 21) by virtue of its Orientalism. As he explains it Dracula symbolized an idea of the sensational that attracted the reader, and not the essence of Transylvania or its historical richness. Nevertheless, fundamental in Dracula are the constant journeys that the characters undertake: across Europe, in between cities, across provinces or from America. All these journeys have a fundamental aspect in common: they all start from or finish in the capital city of the largest empire of the world in the nineteenth century: London. This city represents one of the key locations that the author uses for the development of the plot because of the importance it had at that moment.
A second trace that can be found in the concept of vampire in history makes reference to Western religion. McNally and Radu talk about the first woman on Earth called Lilith or Lilitu. In the Talmud, the book of laws, customs and Jewish traditions, Adam had a wife before Eve named Lilith. However, Lilith disobeyed Adam and questioned his authority.
Doubtless he created a model for the classical vampire which was developed by the ages. In 21st century Stephanie Meyer composed a romantic book using modificated vamp creatures. Mixture of classical personality of the villain and born in her dream figures of perfection. Described earlier differences present how vampires changed during time. In spite of all I cannot deny both ‘Dracula’ and ‘Twilight’ turned out to be World phenomenon.
