The percentage voting also varies on what office election is being held. Many people come out for the presidential election because there is more media coverage on the election. People are made more aware of who the candidates are and there positions on certain issues, which encourages people to go out and vote, heavily Democratic in Assemblywoman Solages’ district. In local elections, people pay more attention to the election if there is an open seat rather than an incumbent running. It is obvious that if an incumbent is running, people will naturally re-cast their vote for that candidate.
In the middle of a deterioration in crop prices and a troubling political chaos the Populist Party was established. The Populists Party was correctly as it broadcasted, for the people. The Populist Party was a short term political party in the United States, recognized in 1891. The party was at its toughest in 1892 through 1896 and then quickly wore away. The Populists offered both better government regulation over the economy and to give the people more control over the government through the secret ballot, direct election of United States senators and replacement of the Electoral College with direct election by popular
It is not that a low turnout affects the legitimacy of the vote as much as it really is not a truthful representation of the people as a whole, which is two different things in my opinion. Here is an example of how to interpret the low voter
There are a number of differences in the demographics between the ones that are and are not politically involved. Older people tend to vote more than the younger people by their concern toward the government, as well as the number of white Americans voting more than the other minority races would. The educated will vote more than the uneducated by having more knowledge of the election, along with families with higher income of over $65,000 having time to vote than the low income ones of $35,000 or under. The ones who shows party identification would want to get involved in politics, whereas independent individual would not care as much. People who grew up with specific ideology would want to have a say in politics, in contrast to those who did not.
Presidential Election 1896 The presidential election of 1896 was a battle between Republican William McKinley and Democrat Williams Jennings Bryan, which resulted in a victory by McKinley. Politicians of 1896 considered this campaign to be an election that ended the Third Party system and began the Fourth Party system. The country’s main affair was the money supply because of the economic depression that began in 1896. The community opinion was divided between those who supported the gold standard and those who supported free silver.
Hey jackson! I completely agree what you said in your discussion. The low voter turnout should not be worried about and that it is a good thing in general. The people should not vote if they are not interested or are not educated on the election. As you said, If you introduce and educate the people on politics this should help the low voter turnout in time.
Since the 26th amendment there was already a small number of young voters voting. This was commented on in the article where Shin states that “They typically go to the polls in much smaller numbers than their elders.” This has been a trend seen in about every election ever since the 26th amendment was made. They hope that this new age limit will bring a better connection to younger teens and get them into a habit of voting for the rest of their lives (Shin). There was a study done to show that after 21 days of doing an activity, it becomes a habit.
In the article “Voter Turnout” on FairVote’s website they discuss how America’s voter turnout is low compared to other democracies who see as much as 90% voter turnout compared to our 60% average. One explanation given for this is that “...low turnout is usually attributed to political disengagement and the belief that voting for one candidate/party or another will do little to alter public policy…”(“Voter Turnout”). This means that people just do not care about politics or they feel they can have no effect on public
Voting is an important activity which is helpful in expressing the insights, ideologies and motivations of a mass for political parties. Voter eligibility in both national and state election has boundaries and limitations. In some states, only adult white male property owners having certain religious believes had the privilege to vote. As a result, only five percent were eligible to vote in 1790. There were other obstructions such as white only primaries, literacy tests, race, gender and age.
Voter Turnout in Texas As stated in the prompt voter turnout in the state of Texas is amongst the lowest in the nation. Many people seem to be confused or in awe as to why Texas has such a low voting rate. The truth in reality is that there are quite a few reasons why the turnout in Texas is so low.
Voting is one of the many civic duties, as an American citizen, that is the most exercised. In the recent years, the voter turnout has increased from the previous years, but the turnout is still less than desired. In the 2008 presidential election alone, 61.7% of the eligible United States population voted and 53.7% of the eligible Texan population voted. This is much better than previous years, but still does not show a collective effort on the part of all eligible populations to vote. Americans have been known to have low voter turnouts.
In Australia voter turnout doubled, going from “47% prior to the compulsory voting law... [to] voter turnout hover[ing] around 94%-96%” (source 1). Increased voters does mean a more accurate sample size of the population of the country. However, those voters who did not come before are now on equal footing with the men and women who studied and thought about the right candidate for the country. After all, a vote is a vote, and if half the voting population strikes through the first bubble and walks out the door, the first bubble candidate will win unfairly, and clearly not in the true interest of the people.
This unfamiliarity and thought of the process being confusing deters the younger people from registering to vote in the first place. By removing this process, voters can just show up to cast their votes and move on with their day without worrying about this potentially confusing process. These three methods combined could increase the voter turnout for each
However, one of the key characteristics of a healthy democracy is a high voter-turnout. If people do not turn up on Election Day, it is likely that they do not see the point of holding elections or the conditions are not suitable for them to vote. People vote because they believe that their vote has the power to make changes in the country. Voter apathy often develops when voters do not see voting as a way of voicing their concerns. America therefore continues to tread on risky ground, if a way of increasing voter turnout is not found.
One of the things that makes America so great is its election process. The US elections are fair and not rigged by the people in power(as far as the public knows.) Despite this, there are still some people who try and get the elections to go one way. This is called voter fraud. Voter fraud can take many different forms, switching ballots, tampering with results, pressuring voters, and voting in the place of others.
