In the novel, “The Rent Collector” by Cameron Wright, Sang Ly is a Cambodian woman below the poverty line living with her family in the dump. While in the dump Sang Ly is curious because of her interest in wanting to read, she is loving because no matter how sick her son, Nisay, gets, she is always there for him, finally Sang Ly is worrisome because the dump is a dangerous place
Family: You Never Know What You Have Until it is Gone Throughout the memoir “A Long Way Gone”, Ishmael told how he lost his family in war, through this experience he realized that his family is crucial to his happiness and well being, he also learned that he could form other family bonds with different people. “I wanted to see my family, even if it meant dying with them” (Beah 109). The definition of a family is not limited to blood relation, other loved ones can be family as well.
The use of children in the Sierra Leone Civil War was widespread, with up to 10,000 children taking part in the conflict and up to eighty percent of RUF forces between the ages of seven and fourteen. Ishmael is one of these children. In his memoir, A Long Way Gone, Lieutenant Jabati and his men exploit several techniques to transform these frightened children into ruthless killing machines. They do this through the use of drugs, pop culture, as well as character and emotional manipulation. Tactics like these create habits and addictions that are almost impossible to break.
He arrives to work and see's Pino, his coworker, and son of Sal, give him a dirty look and said, " you are late". Pino is a racist person who does not like black people and does not get along with Mookie. In contrast, Vito is a nice and respectful individual who is friends with Mookie. It is with these four individuals that Sal's pizzeria had become so well known in New York. Sal is a person who likes to help everyone and is a well-rounded individual.
In the novel, ‘Never Fall Down’ by Patricia McCormick, the story follows a young boy by the name of Arn who lives in Battambang Cambodia, April 1975. This is the year when the Khmer Rouge began their invasion of Cambodia under the reign Pol Pot. “In the History Place” article, we learn that Pol Pot was the leader of a Cambodian Communist group. After being forced to retreat into the jungle, he formed an armed group of rebels, called the Khmer Rouge. Pol Pot and his group then waged a war against the current leader’s movement.
In the novel, A Corner of the Universe by Ann M. Martin, Hattie lives a predictable life, “Every year it is the same” (Martin 15). But, everything changes when she is told about Adam, an uncle she never knew existed. Her mother tells her that he would be visiting for the summer due to the unforeseen closure of the special school for the mentally disabled he been living at. Hattie is told that Adam goes through mood swings; he could be happy one moment, sad the next, and end up really angry.
In the novel Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin, Liz is mentally shaken by one problem, the fact that she is dead. Along with this one ultimate challenge, she faces many more in Elsewhere while under the pressure and stress of her death. She makes some rash decisions that lead to unintended consequences, and some great choices that helped her out. She also made some friends and met some relatives that greatly had an impact on her. So, Liz grew stronger at working through her death with the help of friends, family, and her own decisions while in Elsewhere.
In the book “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, it’s about a little girl who is pressured by her mother to become something she doesn’t want to be. Jing- mei , the daughter, is forced to become a prodigy(child actress), by her mother, and she doesn’t want to be one. In the story, Jing- meis’ mother uses allusions such as Shirley Temple to push her into becoming a prodigy. Although at first Jing- mei is excited to become a prodigy, she later realizes its something she just doesn’t enjoy doing. Consequently, the uses of allusion in the story help Jing- mei discover to not be a prodigy and that what her mother wants for her is not always important.
“The Power of One” by Bryce Courtenay is a novel which illustrates the harsh truths of the systematic racism faced during South Africa’s apartheid. Throughout the novel Courtenay displays the main character Peekay’s growth and transition from a child to a man who grows up surrounded by the oppression of the South African people. Courtenay uses Peekay’s unprejudiced and independent spirit to show how one person can help to heal the tensions between the oppressed and the oppressor. From a young age Peekay is forced to become independent because of the isolation he faces during his first time at boarding school. Despite facing bullying and abuse; this allows Peekay to spend pivotal years of his childhood forming his own opinions based on his worldview and not the view of others.
Anarchy refers to absence of government; while anarchy is often associated with extremists, it is a necessary tool for checking the excesses of society’s political leadership. Even with the constantly disappointing and corrupt leaders, human beings still vote for new leaders because they have been socialized to believe that governments are necessary for a peaceful society. On the other hand, anarchists argue that anarchy is the most obvious course of action as it will give human beings a chance to create a society they want instead of a society dictated by rules created by the minority rulers. Can you imagine living to be over one hundred years old and being able to spend those years with your sister as your best friend? Well, in the book, “Having Our Say,” by Amy Hill Hearth, with her main characters of Sarah L. Delany as Sadie, and Elizabeth A. Delany as Bessie, tell their story about their struggles and accomplishments when growing up in the late 1800s. However, they hold a very strong position of life long issues such as, religion, racial equality, and valiancy. The sisters had very unique personalities that described who they were. In my opinion, I strongly feel I have an association with the Delany sisters, especially with Bessie.
Where the Wild Things are by Maurice Sendak is an interesting children’s picture book. The main character is a little boy named Max, who has a wild imagination. He uses all five senses as well as thought and his actions to express his personality as well as how he reacts and interacts with his surroundings. Max’s id, ego and super-ego are greatly shown in this book through the way that the author has portrayed him. Not only is this book a children’s story, but it can also be perceived as a life lesson.
Due to the comforts offered by a well developed country, people often fail to realize how privileged the United States is. The U.S. offers exceptional healthcare that is much easier to access compared to less developed countries. Many people from all around the world come to the U.S. to study medicine. When my family immigrated here, I was introduced to many opportunities. One of them is being able to enter the healthcare industry and expand my horizons well enough to offer health care to other countries.
“Two Kinds,” by Amy Tan, essentially revolves around the struggle of Jing Mei and her constant conflict with her mother. Throughout her life, she is forced into living a life that is not hers, but rather her mom’s vision of a perfect child; because her mother lost everything, which included her parents and kids, so her only hope was through Jing Mei. Jing Mei’s mom watches TV shows such as the Ed Sullivan Show, which gives her inspiration that her daughter should be like the people and actors. First her mom saw how on the television a three-year-old boy can name all the capitals of the states and foreign countries and would even pronounce it correctly. Her mom would quiz Jing Mei on capitals of certain places, only to discover that
