Being considered to become a member of the NHS means I have accomplished one of my academic and personal goals. I have shown with my GPA that I am a student who goes above and beyond but more than just demonstrating my determination in my academics, I continue to portray this hard work in athletics, my community, and at home. A small 5-year-old girl walking downstairs through the outside back door of her grandmother’s house in Mexico, sliding down each step of the staircase, set in the exterior connection between the two floors, just to be able to use the restroom on the first floor; a reminiscence that portrays commitment. Uniquely, this one experience defined my character. I’ve replayed this moment in my head many times through difficult times. I’ve had to face fear, anger, disappointment, and uncertainty all alone. Yet, I had never met any other person with whom I could identify with those same trademarks; until I became a medical assistant.
Personal Statement Many pairs of eyes stared at me, while I gave my first speech at the Sikh Temple of Riverside, on the Massacre of 1984 event that took place in Punjab, India. The speech was based upon a book that I read at my Sunday school while I was in high school, which described the 1984 genocide of Sikhs in India, by anti-Sikh mobs, most notable members of the government, in response to the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. Thousands of people were displaced in the massacre and many mothers lost their sons and husbands in these riots. However, till this present day the Government of India has still not actively prosecuted and punished those responsible for the mass killings, and many mothers are still waiting for their sons to return after many years because they don’t if they are dead or missing. Within my role, I have been able to enhance my knowledge and gain first-hand experience within various of clinical environments, and gain a wider prospective of the roles and responsibilities within the healthcare profession. It is a great honor to have the chance to apply to be a member of NHS. Although my academic achievements are the reason why I have the opportunity to apply, my demonstration of the pillar of scholarship isn’t the only reason why I would be a good candidate for NHS. Because I exemplify all four pillars of the National Honor Society: scholarship, leadership, character, and service, I believe that I would be a good candidate for NHS. Many activities that I have done in the past, and still do today, have given me opportunities to demonstrate my leadership skills.
With my desire to assist others and sincere interest in healthcare, my aspiration is to become a physician assistant. I am confident in my abilities to meet the standards, as well as surpass the expectations for a career in medicine, due to my high-achieving academics, notable work experience, and strong qualities and traits. My positive attitude towards learning and willingness to perform at maximum efficiency to achieve my goals has helped me succeed academically. With my excellent academic skills and overly competitive nature, for example, I exceeded the minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA set forth by a majority of the graduate programs. I devoted long, tedious hours into studying diligently and earned a 3.86 cumulative and a 4.0 science GPA by my third year.
The U.S. has the greatest health care system in the world. Problems exist in regards to access to care. These problems are due to misguided policy decision. The current system fails to produce the mix of physicians and leaves thousands of qualified medical graduates without a way to participate in the health care workforce eve with training. This issue has yet to be addressed by the Affordable Care Act (commonly known as Obamacare).
Personal Statement Education is a major step in preparing me for my future career and beyond. The purpose of education in my life is to develop necessary skills, like critical thinking and working under pressure, and apply them to real life situations. Through receiving an education, I am given a chance to explore my interest in the sciences and the medical field. I want to be a physician because I want people to grow old. At the age of 6, one of my closest friends was diagnosed with leukemia. By age 8, the disease claimed his life, robbing him of the opportunity to experience the privilege of growing old. Unfortunately, we live in a society of vanity. We see the process of aging and choose not to embrace it.

For as long as I can remember, I was drawn to medicine because I wanted to save lives, but that was before I agreed to end one. Weeks before graduating high school, I got a call that my dad had been placed on life support after suffering a heart attack during withdrawal. Being eighteen then, I legally had to make his medical decisions. I knew my dad wouldn’t want to live a life dependent solely on machines, but the thought of never seeing him again was unimaginable. I knew I lacked understanding of the situation, and with the high demand for life support equipment and hospital rooms during the pandemic, my decision was pressing.
My decision to pursue a career in the medical field all began when I was a little girl in Vietnam. My aunt brought me alone with her to a blind orphanage where she quotidian volunteered. When we arrived, I realized that this wasn’t just an institution for blind orphans but rather a shelter for all aspect of illness and disabilities. I saunter around and for the first time I became aware of how little others had and how fortunate I was. The volunteers tried their best to provide everyone’s exigency but the institution just didn’t have enough funds to provide enough for everyone.
In addition to working as a Clinical Research Associate, I wanted to gain exposure to other medical fields, not only emergency medicine. Positioned outside the ED’s research work office was the emergency department’s psychiatric unit. Having taken courses like Looking back on Growing Up and the Science of Happiness, I wanted to gain exposure to psychiatry, particularly the effects of early childhood trauma on the incidence of psychiatric disorders during adulthood. Motivated by my interests, I joined the Initiative for Social and Psychiatric Initiatives (InSPIRES) at the Bellevue Hospital Center. While working at Bellevue Hospital gave me the opportunity to interact with a diverse array of patients, ranging from homeless to underrepresented patients, working with the InSPIRES team, I got the opportunity to meet and interview inpatients and outpatients diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or schizoaffective disorder.
Health and social care is something that I have always been passionate about. Because I have studied health and social care for the last four years I have regularly met a lot of the most vulnerable members of society through past work experiences. Through past placements I have worked with children who have special needs. This helped me develop ways of communicating with the children this could be through sign language. Because my Aunt is deaf I have taught myself basic sign language in order to communicate with her effectively.
