The U.S. has the greatest health care system in the world. Problems exist in regards to access to care. These problems are due to misguided policy decision. The current system fails to produce the mix of physicians and leaves thousands of qualified medical graduates without a way to participate in the health care workforce eve with training. This issue has yet to be addressed by the Affordable Care Act (commonly known as Obamacare). It can be made better by making some policy changes to the current framework for physician training and licensures. the current and predicted future physician shortage is an issue that must be addressed by policy makers, medical educators, and hospitals alike. Programs should also be put into place to promote the valuable resource of IMGs, and cultivate their skills to better serve patients here in the US. The growing number of DOs has the potential to make a large impact on the physician shortage, particularly if osteopathic medical schools are able to expand their numbers. There is no single solution to this multifactorial problem, but rather a series of steps that must be taken toward better serving the needs of physicians and their patients. If states were to offer provisional medical licenses to these graduates, the health care system would be able to take advantage of an untapped source of medical talent and could address many of the problems regarding shortages of physicians.
