Walden University’s Master of Science in Education (MSED): Elementary Reading and Mathematics (Grades K-6) is “a program that enhances teachers’ professional growth by exposing them to research-based strategies that will inform them in creating classrooms that excel in both reading and mathematics. This specialization provides a curriculum that encompasses the latest research and strategies to maximize literacy and achievement and to build strong mathematical thinking and problem-solving abilities in students” (Walden University, 2016, Elementary Reading and Mathematics (Grades K-6) Specialization section, para. 1). The school describes social change to be “something that we just talk about rather, it is who we are” (Walden University, 2015, Social Change section, para. 2). Ultimately, the school’s goal is to encourage students to be active agents of social change and to inculcate in them the desire to bring forth positive impact within their community through the actions that they choose to engage. In our world where the level of violence, inequality, and poverty is disturbingly high and climbing steadily, I believe that people who were educated about the value of making a positive impact to the lives of other people will be of great help in battling these prominent global issues. The collaborative efforts of educators who share a common goal of improving the lives of the people of the future by providing their students equal opportunities to learn, as well as relevant, engaging, and highly cognitive learning experiences that will ready them for their careers will certainly make a difference. Since day one and until now, I have constantly been reminded of my role of an educator of the 21st century. My critical role is to provide high-quality education, to help my students develop into independent, problem-solvers and reflective individuals who are competent at taking on the roles of their future careers. Equally important in advocating for social change is my making education accessible to all children under my care regardless of who they are, where they come from, and what they can or cannot do. These are the key roles of an educator of the 21st century, and I believe I will be able to achieve this vision, and ready for my role as I complete the program at
