The ultimate goal of such violence is the domination by one person over the other. Approximately 20% to 30% of women and 7.5% of men in the United States have been physically or sexually assaulted during adult life.1 Our understanding of the scope of domestic violence and our efforts to address the problem have expanded significantly since 1994, when Congress enacted the Violence Against Women Act as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act.
