Introduction: Modern day films and books are not only made for entertainment and leisure but they also have a deep moral within them. Social stratification, consumerism, pollution and corruption are huge social problems within a society. The book Trash by Andy Mulligan and film Wall-E by Andrew Stanton make apparent these social issues within society.

Pollution:
In the beginning of the movie Wall-E, Earth is shown to be a land of dystopia. The first shots that the camera takes is a bird’s eye view of Earth that is, instead of being blue and green it is shown to be colourless.The camera zooms into the surface of the Earth and from a bird's eye you can see huge skyscrapers, which seem like they are made of bricks …show more content…

Examples of corruption leading to social stratification are clearly shown through the book many times. Throughout the story both issues depend on the individual's social rank and status, this demonstrates that people with power can use it in adverse ways. An example of this is when in a negative tone Gabriel Olondriz states “I had lawyers who were relaxed also, and sure of success. But the lawyers-I realized this way too late-had been bought”. This shows how people of higher social status use their power to wrong ways and corrupt other people. Another example of social stratification is when on demands of a higher ranking person Raphael is captured and tortured for information without sufficient evidence from the police. Raphael states “I saw Gardo again, he was screaming at me and a policeman grabbed him by the neck and threw him off”. Suspense is used many times throughout the story to keep people reading. The horrible treatment to Raphael and other people of his social status can be identified from this statement. Even at the police station he is brutally beaten for information. Higher social status people thinking of people like Raphael as useless is made clear when one of the police men makes the statement “Boy, that’s all you are, that’s what all of you are.
