You can’t compete with Wal-Mart. But you can have smaller business that are successful - Bill Cosby. As a plethora may have noticed by now, Wal-Mart has wiped out all/any small or family businesses when they first open in a small town/city. Take Lacombe, Alberta for an example. Lacombe is ranked with the #1 spot in all of Canada to have the best downtown. The whole reason for this is because Lacombe does not have any business such as Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire, Costco, etc. to wipe out any smaller businesses. Although Wal-Mart is exceptional in multiple aspects, we must also think about all the disadvantages within it. There are various little things such as not providing health care for their employees, the abundance of applications that don't get looked at, and employees not being able to establish a union. Now one must look at all the larger problems within Wal-Mart. Firstly, Wal-Mart carries almost everything but their employees do not know much about what they're selling. This is not valuable for someone trying to fix something within their home. The major problem with this is Wal-Mart wiped out smaller business specialized in construction and building. For example, compare Home Hardware and Wal-Mart. If someone went to Home Hardware looking to fix some plumbing, their employees will help by giving a little lesson on how to do so. On the other hand, if one went to Wal-Mart, their employees could point in the correct direction of which their product is located, but they would have an absence of knowledge to share on how to use their products. Not good right? It would be phenomenal if they knew about what they are selling. Not only that, but the employees are paid scarce amounts.
