What changed everything was when the police questioned two white women who accused the nine black boys of raping them while on the train (History). This was another case, just as the one in To Kill A Mockingbird, where blacks were charged for something that they never truly did, just because a white woman said it was true. Emmett Till, a black fourteen year old boy who was visiting his family in Money, Mississippi, from Chicago, is another case where a black man is falsely accused of a crime that he did not commit. Emmett Till was brutally killed for supposedly flirting with a white woman.
On April 2, 2017, 60 Minutes aired the interview of Bill Whitaker with police officer, Betty Shelby. He questions the racial aspect of the shooting of Terence Crutcher. African Americans complained about police brutality but there were not cell phone cameras to capture the officers’ actions. Police racism is a very big problem in America. The killings of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Walter Scott are other examples of police racism and brutality as well. Reasons behind police racism and brutality are simple. People still have a certain way that they think about people of color.
According to the article Racism and Police Brutality in America, “Whites believe that Blacks are disproportionately inclined to engage in criminal behavior and are the deserving on harsh treatment by the criminal justice system” (Chaney 484). The justice system has unfortunately followed this idea. The African American race has been a minority in the legal system in the past; however, it has been much worse as of 2015. Some individuals assume it is acceptable to refrain from acknowledging this fact. Racism is an issue in the midst of police brutality, and it should be resolved.
