Learn to Fail [ Feb. 12, 2012], failure is the most significant, but hurtful step towards a successful life. If a person has never honestly dealt with failure, how can they possibly ever improve or move forward? It is important to learn and be able to solve problems in society, whether it is for academic or not.
In “Want To Get Into College? Learn to fail” (2012), Angel B. Pérez ,Vice President and Dean of Admission and Financial Aid at Pitzer College, argues that students are not okay with failing and are pressured to only show their success, Perez believes that this problem exist because teachers and parents taught them to only show their success and not to show their flaws. Perez supports his argument with his own personal experience .Perez supports his argument with “I wish I could tell you this is an uncommon story, but kids all over the world admit they are under tremendous pressure to be perfect,” (pg. 1 )
Response to “I Just Wanna Be Average" by Mike Rose Had Rose and her mother been educated enough, they could have a voice to raise concerns about Rose’s marks. The author seems to suggest that the teachers were responsible for his underperformance. The author feels that parental and teacher responsibility on his part could have helped understanding what discipline is before going to college. However, it is also possible that he did not try hard enough to be disciplined. Nonetheless, Rose is right that environment plays a bigger role in what an individual eventually becomes in adult life (Munns et all, 2013).
“Conquering the Freshman Fear of Failure” an article written by David L Kirp is a piece that illustrates the link between fear and doing bad in school. David Kirp writes about the psychological result of giving students an environment where they will set themselves up for failure. He tries to promote the scientific study where it mentions that intellect and genetics have very little correlation. Kirp believes when you put students in a discouraging environment and plant failure in their minds, nothing can be achieved. He grabs his audience’s attention by channelling into their sympathy and bringing credibility to his argument.
The article "Who Are You and What Are You doing Here" by Mark Edmundson supports much detail in finding your true self in the journey of college. In the beginning of the article, Mark Edmundson shows emphasis on the reality of college. The author adds that the professors in college won’t put in effort if the student does not do the same. To Edmundson, success is earned not given. Implying that you have to work hard and fight your way through college to graduate and be included to the occupational society.
This is where failure comes in. Sherry proclaims that we need to recognize that this fear of failure is a positive teaching tool. The Pursuit of Grades Over Happiness There are many accomplishments that we have achieved, yet many to achieve, and the race towards them never seems to stop. Well, this is the case for many students because the race towards achieving high grades never comes to an end. Grades are meaningless in the grand scheme of things, as they do not control the rest of your life, but yet are still overly looked upon and can affect a student’s life drastically. As I look back on my journey to college, I faced many different problems and disadvantages even before taking my first steps on campus. In Linda Banks-Santilli’s “Guilt is one of the biggest struggles first-generation college students face” many first generation students view being the first one in the family as a major flaw before entering college (Banks-Santilli, 2015, Par. 4 &7). The lack of self-respect makes it difficult for students to achieve success without help or motivation. The students have to change their viewpoint about being the first to go to college in their family as a weakness and make it a strength to help motivate them to be better students.

Being satisfied with accomplishments only sets people at a certain level of grit for a lifetime. People can never grow more round as a student, athlete, or character without taking shots in life. As a student, I was always great at academic level classes by earning and receiving high grades. Until I was recommended for Dual Enrollment United States history, I had never understood how much extra work I had to put in to be successful and grow in that college level class.
Everyone knows that life is not easy all of the time, and everyone will make mistakes. Making mistakes is an inevitable part of being human. However, it is what you choose to do afterwards that matters. Successful people choose to leave it in the past, and to learn from it in the future. It is hard to be successful if all of the focus is on failure.
My self-leadership style has been one of necessity. I graduated high school while I was 8 months pregnant and was married less than 24 hour later. The need to be my own boss led me to go to college when my youngest was 5 months old. Working dead end jobs really puts things into perspective especially when you work so hard for less than a living wage. I graduated with an Associates in Medical Assisting in 2005 and hated every minute of it.
