The films of War of the Worlds were originally based on the H.G. Wells novel, The Martian, and were recreated into a movie twice in completely different eras. The movies are similar in the sense that they were both created after major catastrophes to America. Yet, they were very different due to more advanced technology in the later version and what the producers saw fit in the times they were filmed. Both of the films greatly impacted peoples’ anxieties for traumatic experiences that the US was going through at the time of the films. In the 1953 version of War of the Worlds, it addressed the fear and curiosity of the Cold War. In the later 2005 version, the movie helped express the fear and trauma of the recent attacks of the World Trade Center in 2001. During both of the periods of which the movies were released there was much anxiety that there would be overwhelming future attacks that would dominate over the US and much more. In the 1953 film the only location is in a small town in California, where they only get reports of other city invasions. In the 2005 movie, the characters move every second they can. The family moves from a city in New Jersey to Boston and other in between. The fact staying in one location can make it difficult for a viewer to experience the threat that was going on around the world in the film, but, changing the setting constantly, as in the new version, makes a viewer realize that the machines are everywhere and bring more fear to the people. The 2005 film has a wide change in setting, from city to city and from house to house, where the older film stays in on town and they only change buildings a few times. The newer version displays a more dramatic standpoint than the 1953 film because there is such a change in setting that was not shown in the original
