In the three months in which Phil’s men trained as a crew, 3,041 AAF planes--more than 33 per day--met with accidents stateside, killing nine men per day. In subsequent months, death tallies exceeding 500 were common. In August 1943, 590 airmen would die stateside, 19 per day (61).”
In one event, Louie and 7 other crew members on the Green Hornet (the name of the plane) all crash: “The engine wouldn't start. The plane kept dropping. Green Hornet was doomed. The best Phil could do was try to level it out to ditch. He grunted three words into the interphone: ‘Prepare to crash.’
During one of his missions, his B-24 plane suffered damage and some of his crewmates suffered injury. Awaiting reassignment, in Hawaii, the healthy men received a different B-24 “The Green Hornet”. Unequipped for the air, Louie’s superiors ordered that his crew to complete a search and rescue mission. Experiencing mechanical difficulties, they crashed into the Pacific on May 27, 1973. Only three of the men onboard survived : Louie, Phil, and Mac.

In the story I Never Had It Made by Jackie Robinson, Jackie was the first African American to play in the Major Leagues. Finally, in the story “Father of Chinese Aviation” by Rebecca Maksel, Feng Ru, became the first Chinese aviator to build planes of his own design.
In the second section of the book, “Unbroken”, the author talked a lot about the experiences of the crew that Louie was with when he joined the army. Louie ended up with Phil and several other men to form a crew with their plane, a B-24 model, which they named “Superman”. They were all great pals who went through thick and thin together, but they believed the chance of survival was slim. One day, they barely managed to get it back to home base on one mission when the enemy relentlessly attacked their plane. However, one crew member was beyond help and several more had injuries that rendered them unsuitable for battle, their plane was also unrepairable.

Ned Kelly was born on June 1854, in Beveridge, Victoria. His family were all Irish Christian. His father, John ‘Red’ Kelly, got sent over from Ireland to Australia for two different reasons; 1. The English people took over and destroyed the houses in different parts of Ireland, 2. he got sent over to Australia because he was a convict and done lots of different crimes back in Ireland.
At the beginning of the war, many accidents were due to mechanical problems with planes, bad weather and errors in navigation. Louie called the B-24 that they flew on a “Flying Coffin.” “Flying the B-24, one of the world’s heaviest planes, was like wrestling a bear” (Hillenbrand 55). On Thursday, May 27, 1943, Louie, his friend Phil and Cuppernill were headed to Honolulu for their day off. Before they left, a lieutenant flagged them down and told them there were going a mission to search for a missing pilot.
True hero or just selfish. Readers disagree on whether or not Sammy, in “A&P” by John Updike, is a hero or not. I do not think Sammy is a heroic character because he disrespected his boss, did not consider the consequences, and acted with his own personal agenda. Sammy disrespected his boss, Lengel. Sammy, who is only nineteen, quit his job suddenly without any notice.
George Watson was awarded the medal of honor for his efforts in the pacific. George Watson was a private in the US military, he was killed in battle but played a huge role in the outcome of that battle. He not only received very big military recognition but he received recognition on the homefront. The red tails were 156 aircraft strong.

The first test of a Hydrogen bomb also known as a fusion bomb immediately vaporized the island, it was tested on and left a mile wide crater. A Hydrogen fusion bomb is an atomic bomb made from nuclear isotopes of trinitan and deuterium. A neutron is fired at a nuclei and adds to the weight of the bomb, causing a chain reaction of exploding. The effects of a Hydrogen bomb are extensive. History shows this because when the first hydrogen bomb was tested it vaporized the island immediately and left nothing but a crater.
